Launched in 1976, the Honda CG became the best-selling motorcycle in Brazil after being associated with the image of Pelé. Understand how this story began and why the model remains dominant in the Brazilian market.

Since it appeared on the streets of Brazil, a motorcycle achieved something that few accomplish: crossing generations without losing relevance. The Honda CG is not just a popular means of transportation, but a true phenomenon of the Brazilian market. Part of this success comes directly from a name that needs no introduction: Pelé. When the greatest football player of all time connected with the model, the motorcycle’s story changed forever.

When King Pelé Entered the Scene, Everything Changed

In the beginning, the Honda CG was just another novelty trying to carve out space in Brazil. The landscape changed when Edson Arantes do Nascimento began to circulate with the model, creating an immediate identification with the public. The impact was natural and powerful. If the King used it, Brazilians trusted it.

Pelé, an eternal idol of Santos, the Brazilian National Team, and also of New York Cosmos, represented excellence, reliability, and success. These attributes were transferred to the motorcycle, even without traditional advertising campaigns. This is what many now call spontaneous marketing.

According to Fenabrave, the entity that represents dealerships in the country, the strength of the Honda CG has consolidated over the years precisely by combining image, mechanical reliability, and widespread popular acceptance.

Leadership That Crosses Decades

From the moment Pelé’s image became associated with the Honda CG, the model gained national reference status. And it wasn’t something transient. Decade after decade, the motorcycle maintained superior performance compared to any other vehicle in the country.

The numbers prove this. In 2023, the Honda CG reached 418,875 units sold, an impressive volume that easily surpasses even the most popular cars in Brazil. For comparison, the Fiat Strada, the leader among automobiles, registered 120,600 units in the same period, less than a third of the total for the motorcycle.

This contrast reinforces not only the strength of the model but also the size of the two-wheeler segment in the Brazilian market, especially for work and urban mobility.

Technical Evolution Without Losing the Essence

Another essential point for this continuous leadership is its capacity for evolution. The first Honda CG arrived in the country with a 125 cc engine, 11 hp of power, and a four-speed transmission. It was simple, robust, and economical, exactly what Brazilian consumers needed at that moment.

As the years went by, the model underwent constant updates in performance, technology, and efficiency, without abandoning its original proposal. More modern brakes, improvements in fuel consumption, and adaptations to environmental regulations helped keep the motorcycle competitive in the face of new market demands.

According to analyses published by specialized outlets like Revista Quatro Rodas, the Honda CG remains relevant precisely by evolving without breaking its identity.

Today, the Honda CG is more than a popular motorcycle. It represents independence, work, and mobility for millions of Brazilians. The historical link with Pelé helped build this legacy, but it was the consistency over time that ensured its place at the top.

While models come and go, the Honda CG remains steadfast as a symbol of trust and accessibility, something rare even in the global automotive sector.
