Honeywell and Repsol Expand Partnership for Production of Biofuels, Recycling of Plastics, and Sustainable Aviation Fuel, Employing Innovative Technologies.
Honeywell and Repsol have entered into a new agreement aimed at the development of renewable fuels. Both companies have committed to expanding their partnership to promote innovative technologies and advance the production of biofuels and sustainable fuel.
This collaboration between Honeywell and Repsol highlights the commitment of these companies to sustainability and innovation. Honeywell, as a leader in technological solutions, will bring its expertise to develop efficient and sustainable pathways. This new agreement will mark a significant advance in the renewable energy industry, combining efforts to create a more sustainable future.
Furthermore, the companies will investigate the feasibility of integrating these processes with the existing operations of the Spanish petrochemical company. The goal is to expand and commercialize the technologies developed by Honeywell, utilizing a variety of waste such as fats, oils, greases, biomass, and solid materials for the production of chemicals and renewable fuels at Repsol’s refineries.
Objective of the Collaboration
The purpose is to produce various types of biofuels, including sustainable fuel for aviation (SAF, in English) and green diesel, using the existing refinery infrastructure. This collaboration aims to align Honeywell’s portfolio with the important trend of global energy transition.

Use of Honeywell’s UpCycle™ Technology
The Spanish company is also studying the implementation of Honeywell’s UpCycle™ Process Technology to transform disposable plastics into recyclable inputs, creating new products from this material. This technology can process different types of plastic, including colored, flexible, multi-layered packaging, and polystyrene.
Used alongside other chemical and mechanical recycling techniques, and optimizing the collection and separation of waste, the UpCycle Process Technology has the potential to increase the plastic recycling rate to nearly 90%. This would represent a significant advance in the transformation of plastic waste into new polymer materials¹.
Importance for Repsol
‘Renewable fuels and plastic recycling are essential for Repsol’s commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050,’ said Berta Cabello, Director of Renewable Fuels at Repsol. ‘Our collaboration with Honeywell to advance and adopt cutting-edge technologies will help us reduce our carbon footprint and become a benchmark in the production of renewable fuels and hydrogen by 2030.’
Both companies have an established track record of collaboration in various areas, such as licensing and developing petrochemical units, catalysts, technical support, problem-solving, digitization, and technology.
Honeywell’s Ecofining™ Technology
Honeywell’s Ecofining™ technology, for example, is used to convert waste such as cooking oil and animal fat into renewable fuels at the Puertollano facility in Spain. The expectation is to produce 240,000 metric tons of renewable diesel and other products annually.
¹ Assuming sorting and collection improve to recover most residual plastics and that chemical recycling, including Honeywell UOP’s UpCycle Process, is widely applied. The 90% of residual plastics that could be recycled may vary depending on the number of consumers or communities that have access to residual plastic recycling or the availability of recycling facilities.
