The lung ventilator named “Inspire” is a new low-cost model, with 100% Brazilian technology, created by a team of engineers from the University of São Paulo – USP to meet the emergency need for ventilators during the pandemic.

According to the statement from the state-owned company, the project was the winner of the third stage of a selection program promoted by Petrobras and the IBP during 2020, where the companies supported with a financial contribution of R$ 1,1 million.

The new model of the lung ventilator received authorization from Anvisa in August 2020 and complies with the requirements of the Associação de Medicina Intensiva do Brasil and the requirements for the treatment of Covid-19

In total, 135 devices will be produced by USP, which will be distributed free of charge to public hospitals throughout Brazil. The objective is to accelerate the production of ventilators in Brazil, so that the country is not dependent on imported components that are missing from the world market at this time of a pandemic.

The development of the new model involved more than 200 collaborators from eight USP colleges, and partners such as the Brazilian Navy, the Technological Research Institute (IPT), SENAI-SP and the Federal Institute. “I can say, without a doubt, that if it weren't for the resources from Petrobras and the IBP, we wouldn't be able to help Manaus now. The arrival of financial support after the public selection was fundamental”, said the coordinator of the Interdisciplinary Center for Interactive Technologies at USP, Marcelo Zuffo.

The initiative for the public notice came from Petrobras' Scientific Response Team (ECR), which brought together a team of company experts to develop technology-based solutions to combat the coronavirus – in partnership with universities, research institutions and companies across the country.

Together for the Amazon

Petrobras is in solidarity with the situation in Amazonas and has been monitoring the worsening and increase in cases of Covid-19 in Brazil. The company is part of the Together for the Amazon group, made up of 15 companies and entities that came together to carry out a solidarity action with the aim of supporting the region.

The group will make a donation to the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation's United Against Covid-19 program (Fiocruz) in the amount of R$ 1,6 million, referring to an oxygen production plant, which should support public hospitals in the region.

Another company initiative to expand the supply of oxygen to the city of Manaus (AM) was the provision of logistical support for the transport of a cryogenic tank from the company White Martins, with a storage capacity of 90 Nm³ of liquid oxygen. Check it out here.
