The Revitalization Project for Petrobras’ Marlim Field Advances Further with Authorization Granted by Ibama for the Installation of FPSOs Anna Nery and Anita Garibaldi, Which Will Be Implemented in the Campos Basin by the State-Owned Company
After a long wait, the Brazilian Institute of the Environment (Ibama) granted the necessary license for the installation of FPSOs Anna Nery and Anita Garibaldi in the Campos Basin, located between Rio de Janeiro and Espírito Santo, this Tuesday, (05/31). This is another important step for the revitalization project of the Marlim Field of the Brazilian state-owned company Petrobras, where the platforms will be installed this year.
FPSOs Anna Nery and Anita Garibaldi Could Be Installed in the Campos Basin After Ibama’s Approval and the State-Owned Company Advances in the Revitalization of the Marlim Field
The Brazilian state-owned company Petrobras takes another step toward the revitalization of the Marlim Field, in the Campos Basin, for the future production of fuels such as oil and natural gas. This is because Ibama granted the installation license for the FPSOs Anna Nery and Anita Garibaldi, which will be installed in the location for production expected to start in 2023, after a long project of works to be carried out.
Furthermore, it was announced that both FPSO platforms will be interconnected to a total of 77 wells after the project’s completion, with 14 new ones and another 63 that will be relocated from already installed platforms in the field that will be decommissioned.

With a length of 225 meters and a capacity of 76 thousand tons, this ship “sinks” its own deck down to 28 meters deep to accommodate war destroyers, oil platforms, and giant radars floating above, and then emerges with everything intact on top like a colossal tray crossing oceans.

A 100-meter platform without a motor, without a keel, and operating upside down rotates 90 degrees in the ocean, sinks 75 meters, and drifts around Antarctica for two years driven by the planet’s most powerful current to study the largest carbon sink on Earth, still poorly understood by science for accurate climate modeling.

With a length of 108 meters and a giant spoon shape, the FLIP was the only ship in the world capable of rotating 90 degrees in the ocean and remaining vertical, with 91 meters submerged, operating for 60 years until it was retired and sent to the scrapyard in 2023.
Thus, Petrobras will be able to advance even further with the revitalization plan for the Marlim Field in the Campos Basin, focusing on resuming fuel production by 2048, aiming for growth in the national oil and gas sector.
Finally, with Ibama’s authorization for the installation of the FPSOs Anna Nery and Anita Garibaldi, production in the Marlim Field is expected to be significantly expanded. Thus, Petrobras anticipates that production will increase from 45,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day to around 153,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day.
The FPSO Anna Nery is being constructed by Yinson, while the FPSO Anita Garibaldi has its works under the responsibility of Modec, which will invest heavily to complete the works by early 2023.
Revitalization of the Marlim Field in the Campos Basin Will Provide Production of 900,000 Barrels per Day After Petrobras’ Million-Dollar Investments
Petrobras is increasingly invested in the revitalization project of the Marlim Field, and Ibama’s authorization for the installation of the FPSOs ensured a new perspective on accelerating the project for the state-owned company. This is because the company announced in recent months an investment of US$ 16 billion in the revitalization of mature fields in the Campos Basin for the installation of three new platforms and the interconnection of over 100 wells, distributed between the Marlim and Roncador fields.
Thus, the FPSOs Anna Nery and Anita Garibaldi mark the initial step of the company toward resuming production in the Marlim Field.
Moreover, Petrobras expects to reach an exploration volume of 900,000 barrels in the Campos Basin by 2026 and ensure even more investments for the Rio de Janeiro and Espírito Santo region in the oil and gas segment in the coming years.
In this way, the former director-general of ANP between 2012 and 2016, Magda Chambriard, stated that “Now, in addition to municipalities like Campos dos Goytacazes, Macaé, and others in Northern Fluminense having the prospect of increased revenue, this will be an increase that counters the decline. And it’s not just the volume of royalty resources. There are also payments of special participations made for very profitable fields.”
