The Brazilian Oil And Gas Sector Was Exempt From The 50% Tariff By The USA. IBP Celebrates The Decision That Preserves Export And Reinforces The Strategic Partnership Between The Countries.

The Brazilian oil and gas sector has just achieved an important relief in trade relations with the United States. The U.S. government announced, in the second half of July, the exemption of the 50% tariff that had been applied to energy products from Brazil. The measure was met with enthusiasm by IBP (Brazilian Institute of Oil and Gas), which classified the decision as a recognition of the strategic role of energy in trade between the two countries.

The announcement comes amid a review of U.S. trade policies in sectors considered strategic. The exemption covers items such as crude oil, derivatives, and liquefied natural gas, which are fundamental for energy flow between the nations.

IBP Praises Exemption And Reinforces The Importance Of Oil And Gas In The Partnership With The USA

In an official statement, IBP celebrated the decision, stating that it recognizes the relevance of the sector in the international scenario.

“The decision to exempt energy and energy products – crude oil, its derivatives, and liquefied natural gas, among others – is a recognition of the specificity of the oil market and its derivatives and of its strategic importance in bilateral trade,” declared the institute.

IBP also emphasized that there is a significant flow of trade between Brazil and the United States when it comes to oil and gas. In just the first half of 2025, Brazilian exports to the USA totaled US$ 2.37 billion.

The Brazilian Oil And Gas Sector Avoids Negative Impacts With The Removal Of The Tariff

When the tariff was announced on July 9, the national industry received the news with apprehension. At the time, IBP warned that, despite the capacity to redirect to other markets, there would be uncertainties in the sector.

Now, with the exemption confirmed, the outlook is for stability. According to IBP, “the maintenance of the sector’s competitiveness in the U.S. market helps preserve trade flows and investments, mitigating immediate impacts.”

In addition, the institute reminds us that Brazil also imports essential derivatives from the USA, which reinforces the importance of trade reciprocity in the energy sector.

Oil Leads Brazilian Exports And Reinforces The Weight Of The Sector In The GDP

Oil was the main item exported by Brazil in 2024, surpassing even soybeans. The sector’s external sales totaled US$ 44.8 billion, according to the Ministry of Development, Industry, and Commerce (MDIC).

The performance shows how the oil and gas sector has become essential for the Brazilian economy. From 2021 to 2023, net exports of the product generated US$ 92.7 billion in revenue for the country.

In the American market, Brazilian crude oil tops the list of imported products. Brazil currently ranks as the 8th largest crude oil producer in the world, which explains the prominence in relations with the United States.

US Exemption Strengthens The Oil And Gas Sector And Prevents A Rupture In Investments

The removal of the surcharge reinforces the environment of confidence between the two economies. Thus, the announced exemption helps prevent losses in investments and in the competitiveness of the national energy industry.

IBP highlights that keeping the Brazilian oil and gas sector competitive in the international market is vital not only for maintaining export flows but also for ensuring predictability in the sector’s strategic decisions.
