At 74 years and 303 days, American William “Bill” Stains was officially adopted by a couple decades younger and entered the Guinness World Records as the oldest man in the world to undergo an adoption process.

The decision was formalized on November 12, 2020, in Enola, Pennsylvania, when Jessica and Ryan Fiscus obtained legal recognition of Bill as their adopted son.

The case differs from the more common processes analyzed by adoption courts in the United States, typically associated with childhood.

Still, the adoption was the result of a lengthy relationship between Bill and the Fiscus family, built over decades and described by those involved as a family relationship that already existed before the legal formalization.

In an interview with Guinness World Records, Bill stated that he never imagined the adoption would have international repercussions or that it would result in a record.

According to him, the recognition came after the completion of the process and was met with surprise. “It’s amazing,” he said, commenting on the official certification from Guinness.

The Relationship Between Bill Stains and the Fiscus Family Started in Baseball

The bond between Bill and the Fiscus began when Ryan was still a child and participated in local baseball games.

At the time, Bill served as an umpire in many games, which made his name familiar to players and families in the area.

Over the years, the relationship continued through other paths.

Bill also worked as a teacher at a nearby elementary school, which expanded his contact with Ryan’s family even after they moved.

The frequent interaction contributed to maintaining the bond outside the sports environment. Looking back on that time, Ryan told Guinness that he has known Bill for as long as he can remember.

In the same interview, he described the adopted one as someone loyal to the people around him, an assessment he attributed to the relationship built over decades.

The closeness extended when Jessica became part of the family.

According to reports published by Guinness, Bill reacted positively to the relationship and maintained close contact with the couple.

From there, the gatherings became more frequent and began to include everyday activities, such as shared meals and celebrations of holidays.

Adult Adoption Was Registered in the Pennsylvania Orphans’ Court

The adoption was registered in the Pennsylvania Orphans’ Court, the body responsible for such processes in the state.

Although adult adoption is provided for in the laws of some American jurisdictions, the case gained prominence due to Bill’s age at the time of the decision and the subsequent recognition from Guinness.

According to information released by the record book, Bill stated that his biological parents, William Sr. and Kathryn Stains, passed away in 2003.

He declared that he has memories of his family of origin but also expressed openness to forming a new legal bond with Ryan and Jessica.

The process was completed on November 12, 2020.

From that date on, Bill became legally recognized as the couple’s son and had the record registered by Guinness.

The book also notes that Bill was born on January 13, 1946.

The Idea of Adoption Came Up in an Informal Conversation, According to the Couple

The initiative to formalize the relationship, according to Ryan, arose in an informal conversation.

In an interview reproduced by Guinness, he mentioned that he brought up the adoption as a possibility during a light moment in the garage.

Also according to this account, Bill agreed with the idea at that moment.

Guinness links the decision to the history of coexistence between the three and the couple’s desire to officially recognize someone who, according to them, was already part of the family in everyday life.

The record also mentions their joint involvement in community activities, including volunteer work in a local organization focused on veterans.

Regarding this point, the published material does not detail the internal rules of the cited institution nor specify how the adoption changed Bill’s participation there.

In the absence of more precise public information, Guinness limits itself to reporting that community involvement was one of the contexts mentioned by the family to explain the decision.

After the process’s completion, the adoption date became an annual remembrance by the family as a symbolic milestone.

According to Guinness, the trio also began informally using the terms “mother,” “father,” and “son” in everyday situations.

Commenting on the personal effects of the adoption, Bill stated that the closer relationship influenced his routine and priorities.

In a statement to Guinness, he said he now looks forward to family gatherings and notices changes in how he interacts with others.

Jessica also commented on the impact of the decision. In remarks attributed to her by Guinness, she stated that the adoption helped bring the family even closer and that Bill is treated the same way as the couple’s other children.

This assessment, according to her, reflects the family dynamics built after the legal recognition.

In the official publication, Guinness notes that the story has come to be cited as an unusual case of adult adoption, particularly due to the age of the adoptee at the time of the process.

The repercussions, as noted by the record book itself, occurred years after the court decision when the title was publicly announced internationally.

Bill’s journey and the Fiscus family raise recurring discussions about the different forms of family bonds recognized by law and how many similar relationships remain confined to the private sphere for not following the more recognized adoption models?
