Meet Nauru, The Isolated Island That Turned Into A Millionaire Power Extracting Phosphate. With The Highest GDP Per Capita In The World In 1975, The Country Today Fights Against Obesity And Poverty.

In the midst of the vast waters of the Pacific Ocean, a tiny point on the map hides a story of disturbing extremes. Nauru, the smallest independent republic in the world at just 21 km², carries the stigma of being the isolated island that turned into a millionaire power thanks to phosphate deposits. In 1975, the country boasted the highest GDP per capita on the planet, reaching astronomical values that even surpassed the US economy, allowing citizens to live in a state of social welfare without taxes.

However, the fleeting wealth gave way to an apocalyptic scene of devastated lands where fruits and vegetables no longer grow. The place, which once swam in money, now leads global rankings in obesity and smoking. The nation struggles to survive in a territory exploited to exhaustion and surrounded by reefs that prevent large ships.

The Treasure of Guano and The Consumption Delirium

The origin of Nauru’s fortune did not come from gold, but from bird excrement (guano). In 1899, it was discovered that the plateau contained high-quality phosphate reserves. After independence, the nation took over the mines and the isolated island that turned into a millionaire power saw its inhabitants abandon jobs to live off rent. The flow of money artificially inflated the GDP per capita, creating an illusion of infinite wealth.

With money flowing in, a consumption frenzy took over. Sports cars were bought only to be abandoned. The coastline became a graveyard of vehicles, witnesses of an era where the government provided everything for free. This temporary bonanza, fueled by phosphate, masked the lack of planning, causing the GDP per capita to plummet decades later.

The Environmental Collapse and The Health Epidemic

The unchecked extraction of phosphate took a heavy toll. Currently, 80% of Nauru is uninhabitable, covered by limestone pinnacles. The barren soil forces the isolated island that turned into a millionaire power to depend on imported canned goods. The poor diet led to a crisis: Nauru is globally recognized for its critical obesity rates.

The World Obesity Federation points out that nearly the entire adult population is overweight. The consumption of “turkey tails,” pure fat, has become common. As a consequence of obesity, diabetes is rampant and life expectancy has fallen. The dream of a high GDP per capita has turned into a public health nightmare.

Corruption, Mafia, and State Secrets

When phosphate dried up in the 90s, the government tried to maintain cash flow with disastrous investments, turning Nauru into a tax haven for the Russian mafia. Under international pressure, the banking system collapsed. Today, the isolated island that turned into a millionaire power survives on controversial deals to receive refugees in exchange for financial aid while trying to hide from the world, through barriers to the press, the devastation caused by the exploitation of phosphate and the obesity crisis.

Would you live in a place where the government pays all the bills, but the cost is isolation and destruction? Leave your opinion in the comments!

Que pena, um lugar que poderia ter explorado o turismo como fonte de renda, preferiram o caminho errado, tomara que consigam se reerguer.
