Submarine Geological Formation May Expand Brazil’s Maritime Limits and Ensure Exclusive Access to Strategic Resources in the South Atlantic
About 1,200 kilometers off the Brazilian coast lies a gigantic geological structure beneath the waters of the Atlantic. Invisible at the surface, the Grande Rio Elevation has attracted the attention of scientists and authorities. Although submerged at a depth of 650 meters, this formation could redraw Brazil’s influence map over the ocean.
Surprising Discovery on the Ocean Floor
It is a volcanic-origin seafloor plateau, with an area comparable to that of Iceland. For a long time, this elevation remained out of the spotlight. But recent studies have revealed surprising details.
Researchers found deposits of reddish clay there — a type of soil common in emerged tropical regions, like Brazil itself.

The coldest region of Brazil will experience very hot weather in the first days of April, with maximum temperatures reaching up to 35 degrees in Rio Grande do Sul, and only in the last week of the month an intense cold front is expected to finally lower the temperatures in the South and Southeast.

Germany discovers how to reuse old window glass without melting anything and can transform 220,000 tons per year into new high-performance panels, using material from nearly 150 million old windows that would be discarded.

China creates hypersonic engine that can make planes and missiles fly more than 6 times the speed of sound with less weight, more range, and without system change.
This discovery indicates that, at some distant time, the Elevation may have been exposed to the surface. Alternatively, it remained out of the water for long enough to develop soil typical of continental areas.
Formation Millions of Years Old
The origin of the Elevation dates back about 80 million years. It emerged from intense volcanic activity on the South Atlantic mid-ocean ridge. Over time, the structure slowly moved westward. During this movement, it gradually sank.
There are also signs that volcanic activity may have continued at isolated moments, leaving marks on the relief that exists today.
Strategic Interest for Brazil
The significance of this formation goes beyond geology. In 2018, Brazil submitted an official request to the UN to expand its Exclusive Economic Zone in the South Atlantic. The country argues that the Grande Rio Elevation is a natural extension of the submerged continental territory.
If the request is accepted, Brazil will be able to exclusively explore the mineral resources in the area. Among these are elements such as iron and manganese — two strategic inputs for the national industry.
Dispute for Resources and Influence
Moreover, the recognition would expand the country’s presence over a region with great biodiversity and energy potential. The United Nations’ decision is still under review. But interest in the Grande Rio Elevation continues to grow.
This formation hidden beneath the ocean could become a key piece in strengthening Brazil’s position on the international stage. An invisible territory that could bring visibility, resources, and influence for the country’s future.
