The Duplication of BR-381 Aims to Improve Traffic Flow, Reduce Operating Costs, and Boost Economic Development in the Region, Benefiting Millions of Miners Along Its Length

The duplication of BR-381, which connects Belo Horizonte to Governador Valadares, promises to transform the economic reality of Minas Gerais, generating an estimated economy of over R$ 1 billion. This investment will not only facilitate traffic on the highway, one of the state’s main bottlenecks, but will also significantly reduce costs for users.

Financial and Environmental Impacts of the Duplication

According to a study by the Federation of Industries of the State of Minas Gerais (Fiemg) in partnership with the consulting firm Houer, the duplication could result in a savings of R$ 1.01 billion in expenses related to fuel, lubricants, parts, tires, and cargo transport time. In addition, there is an estimated reduction of R$ 374.55 million in costs arising from accidents. The initiative could also mitigate about 161 thousand tons of greenhouse gases over 30 years, contributing to a more sustainable future, according to diáriodocomércio.

The Role of BR-381 in Attracting Investments

The director of the Infrastructure Council of Fiemg, Victório Semionato, points out that, in addition to direct impacts, there are indirect consequences that are not easily measurable, such as the difficulty of production flow affecting the attraction of new investments. “The current situation of BR-381 hampers the establishment of industries in municipalities along the highway, especially in the Valley of Steel region,” notes Semionato.

Comparison Between Granted and Ungranted Sections

The study also presents a comparison between the section of the BR-381 that was granted up to São Paulo and the section that remains under public management up to Valadares. In 2023, the cities influenced by the granted section generated a positive balance of 22,907 new jobs, with 5,524 in the industrial sector alone. In contrast, the cities in the ungranted section recorded a loss of 1,180 jobs in the industrial sector, highlighting the importance of the concession for the economic growth of the region.

Direct Benefits for the Population

Semionato emphasizes that the high transportation costs, resulting from the current conditions of BR-381, directly impact freight rates. “These costs are passed on to the final consumer, raising product prices,” he states. Therefore, the duplication of the highway not only benefits transporters but also provides financial relief for consumers.

Advancements in Safety and Trafficability

The president of Houer and a member of the Infrastructure Council of Fiemg, Fernando Iannotti, emphasizes that the duplication of BR-381 has significant potential to improve the security and trafficability of the highway. “The concession represents a step forward to transform the main logistics route of Minas Gerais, directly impacting the lives of over 5 million people along its path,” comments Iannotti.

A New Direction for Minas Gerais

The BR-381 concession round, held between August 29 and September 4, was won by 4UM Investimentos, which includes companies such as MLC, Aterpa, and Senpar. This is an opportunity that the federal government has sought on several occasions, highlighting the relevance and necessity of improvements in the state’s road infrastructure.

The duplication of BR-381 is a crucial step for the economy of Minas Gerais and the promotion of sustainable development. With the private sector taking on costs that the public power cannot fully cover, a substantial return to society and a more promising future for the mining industry is expected.
