While The Fire At The Ceasa Consumes A Warehouse At The Ceasa In Irajá, Merchants Fear Collapse In The Supply Of Fruits And Vegetables On The Eve Of The Year-End Festivities In The Metropolitan Region Of Rio.

A large fire has been affecting one of the pavilions of the Ceasa, in Irajá, in the North Zone of Rio de Janeiro, since early Wednesday morning, and has already destroyed at least 28 stores. According to the Fire Department, four firefighters needed to be treated in local hospitals for exhaustion, after hours of continuous combat, and by the last update, there were no reports of injuries among workers and visitors to the supply center.

The Ceasa is the largest supply center in the state and, on the eve of the year-end festivities, operates with reinforced stocks and special hours to meet the demand for fruits and vegetables. The combination of full warehouses, flammable materials, and the heavy flow of trucks and buyers makes the fire particularly sensitive for the supply of fruits, vegetables, and legumes that supply markets, supermarkets, and small businesses throughout the Metropolitan Region of Rio.

How The Fire Started And Spread Through The Pavilion

According to witnesses at the scene, the fire is believed to have started in a food store located in one of the corridors of pavilion 43, an area that concentrates fruit and vegetable boxes.

Within minutes, the flames spread to neighboring establishments selling plastics, papers, beverages, and other highly flammable products, forming a fire front that advanced on both sides of the warehouse.

The affected pavilion houses boxes that work with papaya, coconut, mango, corn, pumpkin, watermelon, potato, onion, garlic, and other fast-moving wholesale products.

Images captured during the early morning show tall flames consuming metal structures, wiring, facades, and entire stocks, with columns of smoke visible from a distance.

While pavilion 43 was consumed by the fire, other areas of the Ceasa that were not directly affected continued to operate in the early morning, with merchants trying to maintain routines amid the smell of smoke and the back and forth of trucks from the Fire Department and support teams.

Firefighters Mobilization And Impacts In The Region

The Fire Department was called around 1:40 AM and dispatched teams from seven fire stations: Irajá, Guadalupe, Penha, Caxias, São Cristóvão, Parada de Lucas, and Nova Iguaçu.

The volume of flames, the size of the pavilion, and the concentration of flammable material required a prolonged operation, with team rotation and intense water usage to cool structures and prevent the fire from jumping to neighboring warehouses.

Four firefighters needed to be taken to regional hospitals showing signs of exhaustion, the consequence of the combination of intense heat, dense smoke, and continuous physical effort.

The department continued to operate throughout the night and morning, focusing efforts on hotspots and areas with a risk of partial collapse of metal structures and roofs.

CET-Rio, Comlurb, and the Municipal Guard were also mobilized.

Traffic technicians reinforced signage on the surrounding roads, as the smoke was hindering visibility for drivers in the Ceasa area, although no significant impact on the overall vehicle flow in Irajá was reported by early morning.

Immediate Losses For Ceasa Merchants

The merchants of pavilion 43 report that they had reinforced stocks for the Christmas and New Year period.

The expectation was to take advantage of the special hours announced by Ceasa, which offers operation until 3 AM, from December 8 to January 2, to handle the increased demand for fruits and vegetables.

With the fire, scheduled shipments had to be canceled or hurriedly redistributed to other still-operating boxes, in an attempt to avoid additional losses of goods that were in transit to the central hub.

One merchant states that, given the scenario, the guidance was to suspend already planned shipments for the night and redistribute products that arrived earlier to partners in other pavilions.

Reports collected at the scene indicate that many merchants lost not only goods but also refrigeration structures, shelves, utility vehicles, and documents stored in the shops. One merchant sums up the atmosphere in the pavilion:

“It destroyed everything, but we will lift our heads and work to rebuild.”

Risk To The Supply Of Fruits And Vegetables During The Year-End Festivities

The Ceasa in Rio is the main entry and distribution point for fruits, vegetables, and legumes that supply the capital and cities in the Metropolitan Region.

Under normal conditions, the center already operates under pressure from higher demand at year-end when the consumption of fresh products for Christmas dinners, gatherings, and school vacations increases.

With the fire at this pavilion, merchants and buyers fear repercussions on prices and the availability of some items.

The loss of stocks concentrated in specific boxes and the need to redistribute loads to other spaces in Ceasa may create discrepancies between supply and demand for certain products, especially those that had a larger volume scheduled for the coming weeks.

On the other hand, maintaining the operation of other pavilions and the effort of redistribution among merchants in the Ceasa may mitigate part of the impact, at least in the short term.

The assessment of the actual risk of disruption in the supply of fruits and vegetables during the festivities will depend on the time needed to clear the affected area, reorganize internal logistics, and replenish stocks.

Next Steps In The Recovery And Investigation Of The Causes

After the flames are fully under control, the affected area in pavilion 43 of the Ceasa will undergo an inspection to identify the source of the fire and assess the structural conditions of warehouses, electrical installations, and security systems.

Only after this analysis will it be possible to determine whether there will be a prolonged closure of the space, the need for emergency works, and the estimated timeline for fully resuming operations in the affected area.

The management of the center, together with public agencies at the state and municipal levels, will have to deal simultaneously with three main fronts: support for affected merchants, reorganization of the flow of vehicles and goods within the Ceasa, and clear communication with buyers regarding operations during the festive period.

Beyond the immediate emergency, the incident reignites the debate on fire prevention protocols in large supply centers, which concentrate perishable products, flammable materials, and intense circulation of trucks, workers, and buyers in often old and overloaded spaces.

And you, as a consumer, have you felt the impact of fires, floods, or other crises that affected the Ceasa or food supply in your city in your wallet or daily routine?
