To Overcome The Challenges Of The Semiconductor Chip Crisis And The Lack Of Components, The Automotive Industry Is Reinventing Itself And Generating New Service Options For Consumers

The global semiconductor shortage faced by the automotive industry, caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, has been a barrier to car sales in Brazil, especially for more demanding consumers. There is a lack of electronic components – particularly chips and semiconductors – and the crisis is global. This difficulty is due to suppliers prioritizing the needs of technology companies, which are growing at a rapid pace. With the pandemic, there was an explosion in demand for cell phones, video games, and other electronic devices.

Almost 100% of semiconductors are produced in Asia, and the automotive sector accounts for 5% of the demand. Since automakers use older generation products, it is not cost-effective to invest in small volumes, and most production ends up going to the technology sector. According to Anfavea (National Association of Automotive Vehicle Manufacturers), between 100,000 and 120,000 vehicles were not manufactured in the first six months of 2021 due to the lack of components.

Vehicle Subscription, Connected Cars And More Services For National Consumers

These disorder factors in the global supply chain add to the decrease in domestic market demand aggravated by the pandemic, the rise in commodity prices such as steel, rubber, and other items, as well as the appreciation of the dollar and the tax burden, which increases production costs and causes the automotive industry to face an unprecedented crisis. Now more than ever, it’s time to seek other paths forward.

One alternative has been to export to closer markets, such as Argentina, Chile, Colombia, and other Latin American countries. Those benefiting from this are the service and used car markets.

The arrival of the Mexican startup Kavak in Brazil signals this. It specializes in the buying and selling of used cars and promises to invest R$ 2.5 billion in its Brazilian operation, at a time when the used car market has never been so valued.

The automotive industry still believes it can sell more services than cars. One sign of this is the increase in the search for car subscription services online, which increased by 56.5% between April and May, with 12 million visits to 156 automaker and specialized company websites.

The Time For Digital Transformation

Offering conveniences such as preventive maintenance services, fleet performance monitoring, or even route setting has resulted in new business opportunities, supported by partnerships with startups in the sector, proving that in this moment of economic crisis there are possibilities to be explored with consumers, and the digitalization of services is one of those paths.

Automakers that invest in this direction gain additional alternatives to simple selling of the final product, even those linked to the truck sector, which is favored by the good performance of agribusiness and e-commerce. Another route Brazil is focusing on is the manufacturing of electric and autonomous cars, which saw record sales in 2021 and represent one of the sustainable solutions to reduce CO2 emissions.

Although there are still few locally produced models and issues related to taxation, the industry believes in and invests in the potential of this type of vehicle, driven by a more conscious demand for the environmental impacts caused by combustion-powered cars. If you’re thinking about changing your car, the world of hybrids and electrics is still a dream for few due to the high price.

But consider taking a look at the options for used cars or even the offers for new models. To simplify, you can take out a payroll loan. With the amount in hand, you can negotiate a good purchase and pay back that amount gradually through Serasa, with a much more attractive rate. No bureaucracy, no lines, and 100% online and secure.
