In Rio de Janeiro, ICN Is the Shipyard Responsible for the Construction of the Four Submarines Under the Brazilian Navy Submarine Development Program – PROSUB
The Brazilian Navy will conduct the Static Submersion test of the submarine “Riachuelo” on November 21, in Rio de Janeiro, in a maritime area near the Itaguaí Naval Complex, in Sepetiba Bay, a decisive procedure in assessing its stability at sea. ICN Shipyard in Itaguaí Receives the First Section of the Second Submarine of Prosub.
The submarine was launched on December 14 of last year and was named Riachuelo (S40); it is the first of four conventional propulsion submarines (Diesel-electric) and one Nuclear propulsion submarine, the first of its kind to be built in Brazil.

This test will be the first of a series of evaluations that will precede the final delivery of the Riachuelo to the Operational Sector – Submarine Force Command, scheduled for the second half of 2020.
The static submersion consists of the controlled admission of water into the submarine’s ballast tanks until it is fully submerged, without using its propulsion.
This procedure allows for calculating not only the tightness and stability of the submarine when submerged but also makes it possible to collect information about the volume of water that has been admitted into the internal tanks, which are essential for understanding its total displacement.

The operational trials of “Riachuelo” represent a significant step in the PROSUB schedule, a program aligned with the National Defense Strategy. It also contributes to strengthening the Brazilian Naval Power.
The Humaitá is the second of the four and is expected to be ready by the end of 2022. The sea trial for Humaitá (S-41) is scheduled for 2020, Tonelero (S42) in 2021, and Angostura (S43) in 2022.
The last submarine to be completed will be the (SN-BR), which will be named “Álvaro Alberto,” in honor of the Brazilian Admiral who was a pioneer in the use of nuclear technology in the Country.
The PROSUB prioritizes the acquisition of components manufactured in the Country to stimulate the development of the national industrial base and demonstrates the high technological capacity absorbed by the Brazilian Navy and Itaguaí Construções Navais (ICN) in the construction of highly complex ships.
