The Multinational Golar Is One of the Major Liquefied Natural Gas Logistics Corporations in the World (LNG) and Will Invest About US$ 100 Million in the Northeast

Governors from the Northeast participated in meetings this Monday, November 18, in Paris. The meeting was to discuss the international mission of the Consórcio Nordeste, focusing on the creation of ‘blue corridors’, a natural gas transportation route among the nine northeastern states. In addition to the Brazilian governors, representatives from Golar Power, a joint venture between Norwegian Golar and the US fund Stonepeak, were also present at the meeting.

The multinational Golar is one of the major liquefied natural gas logistics corporations in the world (LNG). In August 2018, the company announced its plan to set up a bulk gas distribution hub in Pernambuco for the entire Northeast and Brazil, through the installation of secondary LNG terminals, with the capacity to distribute up to 2.5 million m³/day.

The Norwegian company will invest about US$ 100 million in the state. The information was provided by Brazilian Eduardo Antonello, global CEO. “Pernambuco is an important regional market for the company. The business model we offer is adaptable as it is modular,” said the executive.

The integration project in the Northeast discussed in Paris, called ‘Rota Azul’, includes the installation of fuel stations capable of providing liquefied natural gas (LNG) for cargo vehicles.

The Vice President of Golar in Brazil, Marcelo Sacramento, said that the company’s work plan includes numerous investment opportunities.

Golar Power is building the largest power plant in Latin America in Sergipe. The plant, which will have an installed capacity of 1.5 Megawatts (MW), is located in Barra dos Coqueiros and is in the final stages of construction. Its inauguration is scheduled for January 2020.

Copergás is interested in Golar’s project, which will enable the short-term distribution of gas to major cities in the state, such as Garanhuns, Petrolina, and Araripina.

The ongoing completion of the project in Sergipe will allow for gas distribution throughout the Northeast, according to the CEO of Golar.

The Northeast has an extensive network of pipelines covering the coastline and the largest highway network in Brazil, as well as port complexes with infrastructure to meet both internal and external demand.

Still in Paris, the governors met with Voltalia, a French group investing in renewable energy across 20 countries, including Brazil. In the Northeast, the company has operations in Rio Grande do Norte.

The northeastern states stand out for their significant presence of renewable energy sources. Wind energy already accounts for 29% of the region’s electrical matrix, while solar energy accounts for 3%.
