Selection Process at Fiocruz for Free Academic Master’s Courses in Science, Technology and Health Communication: A Unique Opportunity

The Oswaldo Cruz House, a unit of the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (FIOCRUZ), has opened the selection process for the Academic Master’s Program in Science, Technology, and Health Communication. The announcement offers 15 slots in free online courses for the class of 2025, focusing on training researchers in science communication, encouraging integration between health, science, technology, and society.

The courses aim to train highly qualified researchers capable of contributing new knowledge and strategies to the field of science communication. The area of concentration encompasses studies on the national and international landscape, emphasizing recent transformations, discussing emerging topics in this field. The minimum workload is 48 credits, divided between theoretical courses and the development of a dissertation. The course duration is 12 to 24 months, and classes may be held in person on the Fiocruz campus in Rio de Janeiro or, if necessary, conducted remotely.

Available Slots and Selection Process

There are 15 slots available for the courses, distributed between general competition and affirmative action, as follows: one slot for people with disabilities, three for Black individuals (Black and Brown), and one for Indigenous people. The program reserves the right not to fill all slots, depending on the candidates’ suitability to the expected profile.

The selection process for the free online courses includes affirmative action, with 7% of the slots reserved for people with disabilities, 20% for self-declared Black candidates (Black and Brown), and 3% for Indigenous people. The selection will consist of five stages: documentation analysis, written exam, pre-project evaluation, interviews, and a language proficiency test. The final score will be calculated by the sum of the scores from these stages, and the candidate must achieve a score of 7.0 or higher to be considered eligible.

Application Requirements

To participate in the selection process, candidates must hold a bachelor’s degree and meet the specific criteria outlined in the announcement, such as submitting a Lattes curriculum, a pre-research project, and identification documents. Those applying for affirmative action slots must fill out specific forms and, in the case of individuals with disabilities, present an updated medical report.

Free and Online Courses Offered by Fiocruz – Oswaldo Cruz Foundation

The free online master’s courses are focused on the field of Science, Technology, and Health Communication, with three main research lines:

Scientific Culture and Society: encompasses studies on the interactions between science, technology, health, and society.
Education, Communication, and Mediation: investigates the interfaces between education and communication in science communication.
Audience/Viewer Studies: focuses on analyzing the audiences of science communication activities, such as museums and digital media.

Selection Process Timeline

Applications for the free courses will be open from September 2 to October 14, 2024. The remote written exam is scheduled for October 21, 2024, and the final results will be announced on December 12, 2024. The complete timeline includes dates for appeals and registration approval, ensuring candidates have sufficient time to prepare all necessary documentation.

Applications for the selection process of the free courses can be made remotely through the Fiocruz Integrated Teaching System (SIEF) on the website http://acesso.fiocruz.br.
