Anglo American Investment May Exceed R$ 422 Million, All for the Installation of a Pilot Metallurgy Plant in Goiânia

The British mining company Anglo American reported on Monday that it has entered into an agreement that may generate more jobs for the Brazilian public – the installation of a hydrometallurgy pilot plant in Goiânia. Even though the company’s production has fallen by about 18% in the second quarter due to COVID-19 isolation measures and incidents in mines, reducing its coal production target for the year, everything indicates positive results for the near future.

The agreement was signed between the mining company and the Mining Development Fund (Funmineral) and the Secretary of Industry and Commerce.

Moreover, Anglo American and the Government of Goiás, through , entered into an agreement for the installation and operation of a hydrometallurgy pilot plant in Goiânia. The initiative will allow the viability of this technology to be tested for use at the company’s Barro Alto (GO) unit. The expectation is that Anglo American will begin the pilot project in mid-October of this year.

The execution of the project will last for 15 months, so at the end of the studies, specialists will evaluate a new way to reuse the ore currently extracted by the miner from the Barro Alto mine.

Similarly, the company added: “As the largest underground coal miner in Queensland, Anglo American is at the forefront of technical innovation and has invested significantly in technology to improve safety in its mines. This includes additional methane detection equipment beyond regulatory requirements, digitization to improve underground communication, and equipment automation.”

In conclusion, according to the company’s CEO, both the company and Goiás benefit from the partnership. “Our company is committed to supporting the development of the regions where we operate and generating jobs for the people.
