IPT Commemorates 125 Years Innovating in Society’s Challenges with Technology, Mini Five-Gram Devices, Textile Waste Treatment, and Fuel Decarbonization.
When celebrating 125 years of history, IPT reaffirms its commitment to innovation and tackling contemporary challenges through science and advanced technologies. From the development of mini devices weighing only five grams to innovative solutions for textile waste treatment, IPT has demonstrated its adaptability and pioneering spirit in various fields.
Furthermore, the IPT has been an essential player in fuel decarbonization, significantly contributing to a more sustainable future. The Instituto de Pesquisas Tecnológicas is also recognized for its historical contributions, such as the iconic prototype of the ‘Paulistinha’, which played a key role in the national aerospace industry. With each project and innovation, IPT continues to build a legacy of excellence and positive impact for society.
Renewal and Innovative Partnerships of IPT
The Instituto de Pesquisas Tecnológicas, better known as IPT, is one of the most traditional technology institutions in Brazil and is constantly renewing itself. A recent example is the creation of IPT Open, which is already generating world-renowned projects, such as large data storage in tiny devices.

Few Brazilian institutions have such a rich history as IPT, which celebrates 125 years of continuous activities this week. Its mission has always been to innovate to transform people’s lives. One of the most recent strategies is to open the institute’s doors to collaborations with large companies, as well as startups, governments, research institutions, and universities. This innovative movement has yielded very positive results.
Revolutionary Projects and Global Success
A triumphant example of IPT Open is Prometheus, a partnership with Lenovo. This project is developing systems for data archiving using DNA molecules. This initiative is pioneering on a global scale and promises to revolutionize the data storage industry, allowing molecules to operate in the exabyte regime while occupying only minimal physical space, thus reducing power consumption and operating costs significantly compared to conventional technologies. Devices of this type, with a capacity comparable to that of entire data centers, could weigh around five grams.
It is crucial to highlight that there is global competition to develop storage media that can preserve information integrity for many more years. This technology not only reduces energy and water consumption but also minimizes greenhouse gas emissions, contributing to a more sustainable planet.
Sustainability and Partnerships in Retail
Another notable example of a successful partnership involves the technical area of the Instituto de Pesquisas Tecnológicas and Riachuelo, one of the largest clothing retailers in the country. This collaboration aims for the treatment of textile waste to create clothing from recycled materials. The first collection resulting from this project was launched in the first half of this year, reusing over eight tons of material that was previously discarded. This significant process reduced raw material extraction, helping to mitigate environmental impacts.
History of Successes and Environmental Recovery
‘Eric Bernucci, CEO of IPT, emphasized: ‘The work of a technological research institute is to preserve the environment, enhance the quality of life of people, and promote international recognition of the country. IPT is a source of national pride’. Since its founding in 1899, the institute has committed to overcoming the societal challenges through science, technology, and innovation applied in public policies and productive sectors.
The history of IPT is intertwined with the oldest historical records of technological research in the State of São Paulo and throughout Brazil. Its trajectory includes various actions and relevant projects, such as the recovery of a section of forest from the Serra do Mar (focused on sustainability), and the development of the first national airplanes, to the first major buildings in the country (a milestone in engineering), culminating in significant support for the exploration of oil and gas in the Pre-Salt, conducted by Petrobras, just to name a few examples.
Energy Transition and Biofuels
The institute played a crucial role in research for the development of the ethanol-powered engine in the 1970s and 1980s, during the Proálcool program. Subsequently, the institute was fundamental in establishing the biodiesel specifications for the National Biodiesel Production Program in 2004. Currently, IPT continues to develop studies to promote renewable energies and the decarbonization of advanced fuels, promoting energy transition in the oil and gas sectors, agribusiness, passenger and cargo transport, as well as machinery and equipment.
Regarding the issue of energy transition, Liedi Bernucci highlighted: ‘Our work in sustainable development is transversal to the innovation segment, focusing on future technology and fuel transition’. The Instituto de Pesquisas Tecnológicas is already conducting studies for the utilization of low-carbon hydrogen, an effective alternative against global warming.
Excellence and Cutting-Edge Infrastructure
With 125 years of excellent services, the Instituto de Pesquisas Tecnológicas has cutting-edge infrastructure, with over 160,000 m² of laboratories and highly qualified teams. This robust framework allows IPT to operate in research, development, and innovation with technological, metrological services, and technology education. The institute performs testing, analysis, calibrations, certifications, monitoring, inspections, and consulting, in addition to developing new products and processes.
The technology hubs of the institute continue to stand out: Nutabes, focused on well-being and health; Nuscarbon, dedicated to environmental sustainability and low carbon; and IPT Amazônia, concentrated on the sustainable economic utilization of forest resources. These hubs exemplify IPT’s vocation for the future and its relentless pursuit of innovation and excellence.
