Federal Government Decision for Distributors May Contribute to Stabilization in the National Fuel Market. The 2022 Deadline for the RenovaBio Project Goal Has Been Maintained, While the 2023 Deadline Has Been Postponed to March 31, 2024.
For this Friday, (04/28), the Federal Government has a new decision regarding the carbon credit targets of the RenovaBio project. The deadline for national fuel distributors to meet the 2023 target has been postponed from December 31 to March 31, 2024. According to the program, this year’s targets should avoid the emission of 37.5 million tons of carbon, contributing to a greater environmental commitment in the national fuel market.
National Distributors Will Have a Longer Deadline to Meet Carbon Credit Targets in the RenovaBio Project After Deadline Postponement
The Federal Government has postponed the deadline for fuel distributors to meet their mandatory acquisition target of carbon credits (CBIOs) under the national biofuels program RenovaBio.
The measure, published in a decree on Wednesday, may help avoid a potential rise in fuel prices, a problem faced by the current Lula Government since the beginning of its term.

The deadline for meeting the 2022 target has been maintained as September 30 of this year, but the deadline for meeting the 2023 target has been extended from December 31 to March 31, 2024.
The RenovaBio project promotes the use of biofuels, allowing Brazil to meet its goals for reducing the carbon intensity of its fuel matrix.
The program’s target for 2023 is to avoid the emission of 37.5 million tons of carbon into the atmosphere, thus helping to minimize the environmental issues caused by fuel distributors.
CBIOs are environmental assets issued by biofuel producers, traded on the Brazilian stock exchange (B3) to be acquired by distributors to meet their individual targets, or even by non-binding third parties.
Each year, a CBIO acquisition target is established, but the Bolsonaro Government extended the deadline to meet the 2022 target to September 2023.
Now, the new measure from the Lula Government seeks to stabilize the fuel market situation and prevent price increases.
RenovaBio Project Is Essential for the National Fuel Market, But Distributors Still Need to Expand Their Achieved Targets
RenovaBio is a fundamental program for meeting Brazil’s greenhouse gas emission reduction targets set out in the Paris Agreement.
Furthermore, the program also aims to promote the biofuels sector, encouraging the production and consumption of renewable energy in the country.
However, there is still much to be done to achieve the targets set by RenovaBio.
The extension of the deadline for meeting the targets may help avoid a rise in fuel prices, but it is not a definitive solution.
It is necessary to continue investing in technologies and incentives for the biofuels sector so that Brazil can meet its environmental targets and reduce its dependence on fossil fuels.
During the Lula Government, it is expected that distributors will continue their investments in the RenovaBio project to expand the targets in the fuel sector.
