The decision to stop production taken by the world's leading multinationals in car manufacturing was driven by the lack of parts and also to help reduce the spread of the coronavirus.

Mercedes-Benz announced yesterday afternoon (23/03) that it will stop vehicle production in São Bernardo do Campo (SP) and in Juiz de Fora (MG). According to a statement from the company, the stoppage will take place from the 26th with a return scheduled for April 5th.

The decision, which was in line with the Metalworkers' Union, aims to reduce the movement of people and also to manage the difficulty of supplying parts and components in the supply chain.

According to the National Association of Motor Vehicle Manufacturers (Anfavea), the main supply problem is related to the delivery of semiconductors and other electronic items. There are also missing other parts. However, more punctually. Like, for example, rubber, plastic, resin and steel.

Last Friday, Volvo announced that by the end of this month it would drastically reduce production at the Curitiba factory, in Paraná, also due to a lack of parts and the worsening of the pandemic.

Volvo will reduce truck production at the Curitiba unit by 70% and should remain so until the end of the month. “The reason is the high level of instability in the global and local supply chain for parts, mainly semiconductors, combined with the worsening of the pandemic,” Volvo said.

Scania will stop production in São Bernardo do Campo from March 26th, with a return scheduled for April 5th. The company recalls that it was the first automaker to return to work in April 2020, at the beginning of the pandemic, with the “production system adapted to the strictest health and sanitary hygiene protocols”.
