New Toyota vehicle, possibly called “Stout”, will be a strong competitor in the compact pickup truck market
Toyota, known internationally for the durability of its vehicles, especially the Hilux pickup, is planning to explore a slightly smaller market segment. The Japanese automaker intends to launch a new vehicle, possibly called “Stout”, which will be a direct competitor to the Fiat Toro, Ford Maverick and Hyundai Santa Cruz.
The choice of the name “Stout” for the vehicle is not by chance. In English, the word means resistant, robust and durable, aligning perfectly with Toyota's reputation for reliability. The Stout pickup truck is being designed to be Toyota's representative in the utility vehicle market in Brazil and the United States.

Rumors of the launch of Toyota's new pickup truck
The rumors about the pickup truck launch gained strength after Toyota registered the name ST at the Argentine National Institute of Industrial Property. This is the same name as the compact pickup truck that preceded the Hilux on the local market, with three generations between 1954 and 2000.

Car designer Cléber Silva made a projection of what the Toyota vehicle. The pickup will have a rugged style, wider than the Fiat Toro and more square, bringing an Americanized style to the vehicle. The Stout's front end was based on the Toyota Raiz, an SUV sold in the Asian market.
Fiat Toro, leader of the compact pickup truck segment in Brazil since its launch in 2016, left some lessons for Toyota. Toro's weak 1.8 naturally aspirated E-Torque engine, in addition to its insufficient strength, presented a disproportionately high consumption. Another issue was insufficient air conditioning, reported by many owners.
Toyota x Ford Maverick
Ford Maverick too has its weaknesses, such as the very low load capacity in its bucket, inferior even to the Renault Oroch. These lessons serve as a warning for Toyota, which intends to launch as a Competitive and high quality pickup truck.
The introduction of the pickup truck will play a significant strategic role for Toyota, allowing the brand to enter one of the fastest growing in the world. The Stout is expected to be launched in 2024 in North America and will also be available for sale in South America, where small midsize pickup trucks are even more popular.
The idea of a pickup derived from an SUV, follows the same path adopted by other automakers. The Fiat Toro, Ford Maverick and Chevrolet Montana are examples of pickup trucks derived from SUV and crossover platforms. Using the TNG platform would allow the Stout to go electric, following the electrification trend in the automotive market.
