Young Person From Santa Catarina Creates Solar-Powered Refrigerator To Meet The Needs Of Low-Income Families In Africa Without Access To The Electricity Grid.

A young resident of Joinville, Santa Catarina, created a solar-powered refrigerator, which is already being offered in a prepaid subscription model, making it feasible for various African families to access refrigerators. As difficult as it may seem, owning a refrigerator to keep food fresh or having cold water is still a distant reality for many people worldwide, and an example of this is the populations living in more isolated regions without access to electricity, such as some communities in Sub-Saharan Africa.

The Brazilian André Morriesen, a resident of Santa Catarina, got to know the African scenario up close when he visited Kenya, a country in East Africa. After the trip, Morriesen decided to create a project that could help these communities access better food and quality of life through the creation of refrigerators powered by solar energy.

Thus, the appliance can operate without the need for the electricity grid. The research for this project, named Youmma, began in 2016, with field interviews, market validation, and prototype construction. Nidec Global Appliance, based in Joinville, Santa Catarina, is the company responsible for the advancement and manufacturing of the solar-powered refrigerator.

The company has already initiated a pilot project with about 1,500 units of the Nilo 100 refrigerator. Each unit has a capacity of 100 liters and has been installed in Uganda and Kenya. The installation was done through a prepaid subscription model offered by M-KOPA.

Contribution Of The Solar-Powered Refrigerator To African Families

The product developed by the company from Santa Catarina contributes to reducing food waste and helps with the safe storage of medications, allowing stores to keep products fresh for longer.

Moreover, low-income African families can save money and improve certain aspects of their quality of life, such as reducing trips to the market.

According to the Santa Catarina resident, André Morriesen, in an interview with the newspaper O Município Joinville, the amount that will be saved with the use of the solar-powered refrigerator could change the lives of many people in the region, where the average income per day is approximately US$ 2 per capita or about US$ 10 per family. According to the resident, during the pilot project, several families that participated reported an average of 50% savings in household income.

Learn How The Device Works

For the refrigerator to function, a solar panel must be installed on the roofs of the houses. The compressor operates through a credit system paid via SMS, which is available for 24 hours.

Customers can negotiate payment methods, and after a specified period, users become the owners of the refrigerator, eliminating the need for deposits to operate it.

The solar energy generated by the panel allows the refrigerator to run for up to 36 hours without sunlight. According to Morriesen, in addition to Kenya and Uganda, the project will also be installed in Nigeria, Senegal, Tanzania, and Côte d’Ivoire.
