At Just 28 Years Old, Austin Wells Invested US$ 300 Thousand to Live 12 Years on a Luxury Residence Ship. Onboard, He Plans to Work Remotely While the Ship Sails Around the World with 1,000 Residents
Living on a cruise and working remotely while the ship crosses oceans is no longer a distant dream. American Austin Wells, 28 years old, decided to swap land life for a new lifestyle, a floating city. He invested US$ 300,000 to secure 12 years of rent for a studio aboard the MV Narrative, a residence ship that promises to redefine the concept of housing.
An Apartment at Sea with Everything Included
The MV Narrative, created by entrepreneurs Alister Punton and Shannon Lee from the company Storyline, is set to officially launch in 2025. There will be 500 private residences of varying sizes and prices, designed to accommodate around 1,000 residents. Wells’ studio is 22 square meters, featuring a bathroom, pantry, pull-down bed, and a desk facing the sea.
But the difference lies in the amenities: the ship will have a gym, market, medical care, 24-hour room service, private kitchens, cinema, pool, library, and even a bank onboard. In short, everything found in a modern city, just floating across the seas.

Working, Traveling, and Living for Less
While an average apartment in San Diego, where Wells lived, costs about US$ 2,500 per month, living on the ship will amount to around US$ 2,000 monthly. Besides saving money, he asserts that the nomadic lifestyle is a way to “live well, save, and see the world without giving up on work.”
To do this, he plans to work remotely at night and take advantage of the day to explore the destinations where the ship stops. Each stop of the MV Narrative is expected to last three to five days, allowing residents to experience different cultures and landscapes without leaving home, literally.
A New Concept of “Life Onboard”
The idea of Storyline is to transform the MV Narrative into a self-sustaining floating community, with renewable energy and water recycling systems. The ship will visit all continents, providing its residents the chance to live in constant motion without the feeling of being on a permanent vacation.
The creators assert that this housing model is designed for those seeking geographical freedom, comfort, and global belonging, something increasingly possible with the advancement of remote work. Additionally, the project includes 11 types of residences, from compact studios to luxury penthouses with balconies and panoramic views.

Inaugural Voyage Scheduled for 2027
The MV Narrative is in the final stages of construction and is set to have its inaugural voyage scheduled for 2027. The vessel is expected to embark on a global route that includes cities in Europe, America, Asia, and Oceania, with multi-day stops at each destination. The proposal is for residents to live onboard with comfort and stability while the ship travels the planet in a continuous cycle of journeys.
A Trend That Could Grow
Wells is not the only one interested in this life on the waves. According to Storyline, hundreds of people have already reserved units on the MV Narrative. The company believes that the residence ship is the beginning of a new trend in mobile living, combining sustainability, tourism, and technology.
If everything goes as planned, the MV Narrative is expected to become the world’s first habitable floating city, continuously sailing and offering a new way to perceive routine: living while traveling.
