Mining in Bahia Surprises the World! Emerald Weighing 69 kg, Valued at R$ 1.15 Billion, Will Be Auctioned: Gigantic Precious Stone, Rare and Mined from Brazilian Deposit, Sparks Interest from the Global Market!
An impressive emerald weighing 69 kilograms and estimated at R$ 1.15 billion, will be auctioned on December 11, at 11 a.m., in the city of Salvador, Bahia. Despite the astronomical valuation, the minimum bid is R$ 100 million, opening opportunities for high-level investors.
The stone was found in Pindobaçu, known as the “capital of emeralds,” one of the main precious stone mining regions in the country. Recently, another emerald from the same area was sold for R$ 175 million, reinforcing Bahia’s mineral wealth.
A Natural Green Giant: 60 cm Tall, 20 cm Wide, and 20 cm Deep
Known as emerald canga, the gem impresses not only with its weight but also with its dimensions: 60 cm tall, 20 cm wide, and 20 cm deep. The stone, still in its natural state, has not undergone the polishing process, a common technique that transforms ore into jewelry, such as rings and necklaces.

Brazil extracts 26.3 million tons of ore from what was previously treated as waste, transforming residues into wealth, producing over 3 million tons of sand, and demonstrating how national mining is relearning to generate value.

A $3.5 billion megaproject in Latin America pumps desalinated seawater at 1,050 liters per second over 194 km to keep a copper supermine in the Andes operational for another 20 years.
-
A hidden mine in the Andes valued at nearly R$ 1 trillion is starting to attract global attention, containing copper, gold, and silver, and raises an intriguing question: why do Argentina and Chile need to act together to exploit this gigantic wealth?

A silent discovery in the interior of Bahia could change the future of energy in Brazil: a uranium reserve in Lagoa Real has an estimated capacity to produce 400 tons per year and is already attracting the attention of energy sector specialists.
The company responsible for the auction emphasizes that the emerald has a certificate of authenticity issued by a gemologist accredited by the GIA (Gemological Institute of America) in November 2023. However, the item is unsealed, a situation justified by its exceptional weight and size, which would make it impossible to keep the seal intact.
The auction will be conducted in a live format at Boulevard Side Empresarial, located on Rua Everton Visco, in the Caminho das Árvores neighborhood of Salvador, in addition to an option for online participation.
Brazil Wins! Bahia Emerald Returns to Brazil
Another even more monumental precious stone, the Bahia Emerald, weighing 380 kg, also has a story marked by disputes. Valued at approximately R$ 2.3 billion, the stone was extracted from the same mining region in Pindobaçu in the early 2000s and sent to the United States illegally.
The Attorney General’s Office (AGU) identified that the transport was carried out with forged documents and initiated an international legal battle for the repatriation of the stone. In 2017, the Federal Court of Campinas, in the state of São Paulo, convicted two businessmen involved in the case, accused of smuggling, use of false documents, and receiving stolen goods.
After more than a decade of legal actions, the Federal Regional Court of the 3rd Region (TRF3) formally requested the return of the stone to Brazil. In October of this year, the request was accepted by the American justice. Judge Reggie Walton of the District Court for Columbia recognized that the precious stone was extracted and exported illegally and determined that the decision be formalized by December 6.
Despite this significant advancement, the repatriation may still be delayed if an appeal is made by those involved. In the meantime, the Bahia Emerald remains in the custody of the Los Angeles Police, in the state of California.
Mining in Northeast Brazil: Wealth and Challenges
The city of Pindobaçu, in northern Bahia, stands out as one of the most important centers for emerald mining in Brazil. Known worldwide as a high-quality deposit, the region is home to major precious stone discoveries that drive the global market.
However, activities in the area do not always occur regularly, generating legal and social challenges. Cases like that of the Bahia Emerald highlight the need for stringent oversight and greater regulation in the mining sector to prevent illegal trade in valuable minerals.
Historic Opportunity in the Precious Stones Market
The auction of the 69 kg emerald in Salvador represents an important milestone for the Brazilian precious stones market. With a certificate of authenticity and an estimated value in the billions, the stone promises to attract investors and collectors from all over the world.
Experts believe that the auction could further elevate Bahia’s prestige as a global reference in the extraction and trade of emeralds, highlighting the economic potential of local deposits.
Now, the fate of this green relic is about to be decided. The question remains: who will be the new owner of this rare gemstone from Bahia mining?
