Australia Bets on Lethal Solar-Powered Robots to Eliminate Up to 6 Million Wild Cats in Five Years, Trying to Contain the Extinction of Native Species and Restore Environmental Balance
Australian cities have started deploying lethal robots as an extreme measure to curb the proliferation of wild cats. The initiative aims to protect native wildlife, which has been severely impacted by these invasive felines.
The devices detect the animals and apply a deadly poison, ingested while grooming, as a way to preserve endangered species and restore ecological balance.
The Threat of Wild Cats in Australia
Wild cats, unlike domestic ones, are considered an invasive species and pose a significant threat to Australian wildlife.

Since they arrived in the country, these felines have caused serious environmental damage and contributed to the extinction of various species.
It is estimated that millions of wild cats kill an average of 186 animals per year each. This ongoing predation results in a devastating impact on local reptiles, birds, and mammals.
Therefore, the Australian government decided to take drastic action to address the problem.
The goal is to eliminate 6 million wild cats in five years. To this end, the country invested € 4.6 million — about AUD 7.6 million — in the purchase and deployment of 15 lethal robots.
Although the measure generates controversy among activists, authorities argue that eradication is necessary to protect the ecosystem.
How the Robots That Hunt Cats Work
The robots were developed by the Australian company Thylation and are powered by solar energy. They use smart sensors capable of identifying wild cats by body shape and movement patterns.
This precision is essential to ensure that only the correct targets are hit.
Upon detecting a wild cat, the robot releases the toxic gel Poison 1080. The substance is ingested when the animal grooms itself, leading to death in a short time.
The system was designed to be selective, avoiding any risk to protected species or domestic cats.
Additionally, the robots’ algorithms are programmed to efficiently distinguish between different types of animals, ensuring an effective and safe control method for the rest of the wildlife.
A Billion-Dollar Environmental Impact
The predation caused by wild cats results in more than 5 million animal deaths per day. Approximately 120 native species are at risk, including the numbat and rock-wallaby.
The environmental and economic damages total nearly AUD 300 million, a figure that represents the cost of conservation programs and the loss of biodiversity.
Therefore, the deployment of lethal robots is seen as an attempt to reduce this impact and restore the natural balance of the country.
