According to people who studied influential icons throughout the generations, Elon Musk is the Leonardo Da Vinci or Thomas Edison of the 21st century. His multiple inventions have earned him numerous awards for his work as an innovator and entrepreneur. In addition, they are the center of debates and discussions among the general public and business leaders.

Although not all of Musk’s inventions have succeeded to the same degree, he has been an inventor since his teenage years. His early ideas were based on software and companies in that segment. Over time, his vision evolved into mass transportation and consumer products.

While some of his visions may have seemed very advanced in their early stages, they have proven to be great successes. Even better, his remarkable track record is enough to silence many critics. His innovations and advancements have helped him achieve a net worth of $229 billion.

What Has Musk Invented So Far?

Surely, you must have heard of Musk because of some of his major companies, but there is more to him than Tesla and SpaceX. In this article, we will go through a list of Elon Musk’s inventions up to 2023:

1. Electric Cars – Tesla Motors

Nowadays, when the word Tesla is mentioned, you can’t help but think of Musk. Likewise, when you talk about Musk, many people associate him with Tesla. Tesla is a publicly traded electric motors company. What is even more impressive is how the company’s stock has multiplied in the past few years.

To be exact, Tesla is worth 700% more than it was two and a half years ago. As we write this article, a share is worth about $196.79. The company’s revenue in 2022 was notably high, reaching $24.32 billion.

There is significant demand for its cars, especially the newer models like the Model 3. This model boasts a range of 200 miles and is priced at around $35,000. However, the company still struggles to keep up with demand through production.

2. SpaceX

Like Tesla Motors, SpaceX is another company and invention of Musk. This aerospace company is known worldwide for its achievements in the sector. Musk founded SpaceX to reduce the cost of transporting cargo to space. One of SpaceX’s main goals is also the colonization of Mars.

The Falcon 9 and Falcon 1 rockets owned by this company are designed to be reusable. Consequently, this reduces the cost of making a new one from scratch. So far, the company has successfully completed about six missions carrying cargo to the ISS (International Space Station). They have also secured a contract with NASA to transport crew members to the station and back.

However, they faced a setback due to the explosion of the Falcon 9 after launch. Following this incident, they suspended flights to space and embarked on redesigning to address the problem.

3. Hyperloop

Hyperloop is one of Musk’s most ambitious projects of all time. He introduced this transportation system almost a decade ago. The system was built to significantly reduce travel time from Los Angeles to San Francisco. Once the development of Hyperloop is completed, passengers will take nearly half an hour to travel between these two cities. This will be faster than taking a flight, allowing you to reach either city more quickly.

The Hyperloop will install the rail system in a tube. The idea is to suppress air pressure. Theoretically, low pressure means that drag will be reduced, enabling it to reach about 800 mph. Meanwhile, energy consumption will drop significantly. The design is still on paper, and the concept is theoretical. However, Hyperloop is still struggling to make this a reality.

The first foray into this project is scheduled to start in 2023, and we are still waiting for official updates. It will cover about five miles in Quay Valley, California. However, the biggest obstacle to this project is the cost of technology and land. That is what is making the project take so long to implement.

4. Web-Based Phone Calls

In 1997, Musk had an idea that would allow people to make landline phone calls through their computers. A few years later, he patented the idea (2001). Compared to Skype, his idea was quite straightforward. With his idea, you simply need to find contacts online, click on them, and make phone calls. The calls then reach the recipient through a call center.

5. SolarCity

Musk co-founded SolarCity with his cousin in 2006. Since its founding, they have become the second-largest company in the industry nationwide. SolarCity is the second largest solar energy provider in the country, with a net revenue of $102 million. Although they are based in California, they also serve exclusive areas in more than 10 other states. They are also solar energy providers in the District of Columbia.

They are now working on a solar energy storage system. This way, consumers will be able to use solar energy not just during the day, but also at night. This company is also closely collaborating with Tesla Motors. They are striving to create free charging stations for owners of those vehicles traveling between San Francisco and Los Angeles via Route 101.

6. X.com or PayPal (Electronic Payment)

Musk was one of the co-founders of X.com, a company launched in 1999. The company’s focus was on email payments and financial services. After a year, X.com merged with Confinity, another software company, to create the company we know today as PayPal. However, they later auctioned it off, and eBay bought it for $1.5 billion in 2002. From that sale, Musk made about $165 million.

7. Zip2 – City Guides

Zip2 is the first web software company that Musk founded. He built this company with the help of his brother and a loan from his father. It was aimed at the newspaper industry in its quest to help online users with city guides. After considering a merger with City Search and then rejecting it, they sold the company to Compaq in 1999 for $307 million. Musk received $22 million from that sale.

8. Blastar Game

Before his idea of colonizing Mars and electric car inventions, Musk was a video game enthusiast. At age 12, he designed his first video game. While that is impressive, he later sold it for $500 to a magazine company. If you’re curious about what the game is like and how to play it, Blastar still exists today. With a few quick clicks, you can try it for yourself.

9. Electric Jet

Although Musk has not officially launched this project yet, he presented the idea to the world during the Centennial Aeronautics Symposium at MIT. On the Colbert Report, he also shared the idea of having an electric jet with vertical takeoff.

Musk is also working on achieving a vertical takeoff electric supersonic jet. The fans of this jet will feature electric motors to operate and propel the aircraft. Thanks to the vertical takeoff and landing, airports will use less space since the aircraft will not require runways.

10. Location-Specific Searches

In the 90s or even before that, it was not a priority to find specific businesses near you. However, that didn’t stop Musk from coming up with this idea. Perhaps he knew we would need this concept in the future. He actually had this idea in 1998.
According to Musk, online users would be able to search online and find results based on their geographical location. To obtain a refined result, the search will be automatically expanded to avoid the need for a refined search. This can continue until you get sufficient results.

Through Starlink Internet, Musk is creating a future where you can access the internet from anywhere on the planet. What exactly is Starlink Internet? Well, this is a new technology designed to break the current stigma when it comes to accessing the internet via satellite. It will also provide users with access to a low-latency network.

He offers the service with a 50% discount in Brazil on April 30; find out more about how to get your satellite internet here.

One of the goals of Starlink Internet is to provide services to the most remote areas of the world. This is done through a private satellite they own. Thanks to this approach, locations without connectivity will also access fast internet connections. They will also enjoy connectivity benefits like those in urban centers.

12. Digging Machines

Traffic congestion is now common in cities around the globe. Although the transportation sector has improved, moving from point A to point B is more frustrating than ever. There are countless passengers on the road, making it harder to reach your destination faster.
Musk has a solution for this – digging machines. With these machines, you will be able to travel between cities more quickly. Furthermore, this invention will reduce the cost of underground excavation, which is currently very high.

13. Tesla Storage Centers

While you can use solar panels during the day, using them at night always proves to be a challenge. Unless we develop ways to harness moon energy, it will be difficult to produce solar energy at night. To overcome this setback in solar energy usage, Musk created Tesla storage centers.

Businesses and residences can now access solar energy from these storage units. These storage centers are popularly known as Powerwalls or Powerpacks and are efficient energy storage systems. Moreover, they store not just solar energy but also wind energy.

Musk’s neural interface technology company, Neuralink, is working on a brain chip designed to be embedded in the user’s brain to record and stimulate brain activity. Musk’s vision is that this device will achieve a symbiosis between the human brain and artificial intelligence. He also hopes that the chip can eventually be used to treat neurological conditions, restore vision in blind people, and restore full bodily functionality in individuals with spinal cord injuries. When brain cells connect and communicate with the computer, performance is expected to improve.

Brain implants to treat neurological diseases may seem fanciful and like an invention of the future. This concept was first put into practice by placing an implant in a pig’s brain.

In a December 2022 announcement, Musk shared plans to implant one of the chips in his brain as soon as they become available. Whether the chip will work as he claimed remains to be seen. For now, we are still waiting for Neuralink to complete its testing.

15. X

Although it doesn’t count as an invention of Musk, since he bought Twitter (now known as X), he has made many changes to make it his own. Besides restructuring the platform, he changed the entire face of Twitter, giving it a completely new business model. To be more specific, he introduced a new content moderation system and new charges for verification status, which raised concerns for both businesses and individual users of Twitter. These changes cost Musk many X users and led advertisers to leave in droves.
As Musk works to pay off the loan that banks like Morgan Stanley gave him for the purchase of Twitter, he is also facing the challenge of retaining users on the platform.

16. X.ai

Elon Musk founded X.ai in March 2023 with the initial goal of addressing existential problems of understanding the universe. The company has since evolved to focus on developing AI technology that can perform advanced mathematical reasoning not seen in current AI tools.
In November 2023, X.ai launched Grok, an advanced AI chatbot that is integrated into X and will be available exclusively to X Premium+ users once it exits beta testing.

Musk Is Like The Real-Life Tony Stark!

These are just some of Elon Musk’s popular inventions. While some of them are impressive and futuristic, he doesn’t seem to be slowing down anytime soon. In fact, we are willing to bet that any moment now, we will be hearing about yet another new concept that he has invented. For now, we are also still waiting to hear if the much-talked-about Tesla Phone Model Pi is mere speculation or a real invention.

When you look closely, you will notice that most of these inventions aim to make consumers’ lives easier. Some of them are focused on conserving available resources. For instance, with vertical takeoff electric jets, airports will be much smaller.

They will only need parking space for the planes to land. This means runways will be obsolete in the future. Electric motors, on the other hand, reduce dependence on fossil fuels. This invention not only conserves natural resources but also protects the planet from carbon emissions.

From Musk’s inventions and successes, you can learn that nothing is too far-fetched to become a reality. If you have an idea, all you need is funding to bring it to life. And for an idea to come to life, you need to believe in yourself and pursue it consistently.
