Municipality Reaches the Top of the State Ranking with a Positive Balance of 1,009 New Formal Jobs, According to Data from the New Caged Released by the Ministry of Labor and Employment.

Macaé, a municipality in the interior of Rio de Janeiro, achieved first place in formal job generation across the state in February 2025, with a positive balance of 1,009 new jobs. The data is part of the report from the General Registry of Employed and Unemployed (Novo Caged), released by the Ministry of Labor and Employment.

According to official records, the result reinforces the city’s position as one of the main economic growth hubs in the state. In the year-to-date, 3,009 formal jobs have already been created in the municipality. Considering the first quarter of 2025, Macaé accounts for 5,384 new formal job positions.

Sustained Expansion Since 2021

The growth pace is not recent. Since 2021, approximately 40,000 jobs have been created in the city, according to municipal management data. Mayor Welberth Rezende attributes the progress to public policies focused on sustainable development and attracting investments.

“Our administration works to diversify the economic matrix of Macaé and ensure that economic growth is accompanied by real improvements in the quality of life of the population,” stated the mayor.

Energy Sector Drives Development

A large part of the job market expansion in Macaé is directly linked to the energy sector, with a focus on offshore operations and new investments in natural gas, oil, thermal energy, and logistics.

The Secretary of Economic Development, Rodrigo Vianna, highlighted that Macaé currently hosts the largest offshore airport terminal in the world in terms of operations. Additionally, the municipality concentrates a business environment that, according to him, is one of the fastest-growing in Brazil. Among the ongoing investments are:

  • US$ 9 billion directed to the Route 5 for gas drainage and to the megafield operated by Equinor;
  • R$ 30 billion invested in the Tepor (Port Terminal of Macaé) and the Southeast Thermal Park;
  • The installation of a project aimed at the fertilizer industry;
  • R$ 123 billion announced in the Petrobras Business Plan for investments in the Campos Basin;
  • R$ 260 million for the expansion of the Macaé airport.

These initiatives are directly connected to the increase in job offers and the strengthening of the local production chain, which includes areas such as construction, logistics, transportation, hospitality, food, services, and technology.

Infrastructure and Natural Gas Expansion

Another determining factor for job generation is the expansion of infrastructure related to natural gas. Currently, Macaé operates with 40 million cubic meters of natural gas per day. With the entry of Route 5, this volume will increase by an additional 16 million cubic meters, which is expected to drive new job opportunities and attract even more companies to the region.

This activity reinforces Macaé’s strategic position in the national energy scenario and its importance within the country’s energy transition plan.

State Comparison: Macaé in the Lead

Macaé’s performance in February greatly surpasses that of other municipalities in Rio de Janeiro. According to the Ministry of Labor, the cities that follow in the state ranking for formal job generation are:

  • Seropédica: 473 new jobs
  • Duque de Caxias: 430
  • Rio das Ostras: 322
  • Itaguaí: 293

The result reinforces Macaé’s leading role in the Fluminense economy, with indicators reflecting solid and continuous growth in recent years.

Favorable Environment for Workers and Companies

In addition to the presence of large companies in the energy sector, Macaé is also betting on training the local workforce as part of the strategy to maintain the pace of job generation. According to the city hall, several partnerships with technical education institutions and universities have been established to prepare professionals in areas with the highest demand.

The city hall also highlights that it has been promoting the simplification of processes to facilitate the opening of new businesses and the accreditation of local suppliers and service providers.

Expectations for the Coming Months

With the ongoing large infrastructure works and the growing operation of projects related to energy and logistics, the expectation of the municipal public sector is that positive numbers will continue throughout 2025.

In the coming months, the expansion works of the Macaé airport are expected to advance, reinforcing the municipality’s position as the main connection point for offshore activities. The initiation of new industrial projects could further boost the local job market.
