On Tuesday, June 21, the largest strike in the last 30 years in the United Kingdom in the railway sector began. Workers in the area seek better working conditions and challenge the levels of inflation that the country has been experiencing. The dispute over better wages and jobs may lead, according to a report shared by CNN, to a labor clash.

Workers announced they would strike in the United Kingdom for three days this week, starting on Tuesday, June 21, Thursday, June 23, and Saturday, June 25. The train network has been halted since early today, and the country’s stations are deserted due to a lack of railway workers.   Meanwhile, other sectors are being affected by the lack of transportation, which may result in losses regarding salary payments.

Boris Johnson Only Criticizes UK Workers

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has been under pressure to make decisions regarding the demands made by railway workers. However, he has stated that the current frequency of the strikes could harm the country by causing companies that were beginning to recover from the pandemic to remain stagnant, given that professionals in other sectors would lose workdays due to a lack of transportation. Johnson mentioned that the unions claim to be trying to help people, but their actions, in the long run, could harm the overall economy.

The unions claim that the “summer of discontent”  may be near, and that soon other sectors will strike, especially in the case of public servants like teachers and garbage collectors. Doctors and lawyers have also begun collective actions.

Mick Lynch, general secretary of the Rail, Maritime and Transport Workers (RMT), to Sky News, stated that UK workers need, more than anything, a salary increase. Job security and decent working conditions are slipping away from the realities of the UK and, according to the economist, failing to meet demands could jeopardize the British economy.

When times are good, the rich take everything. When things get tough, workers pay.
We are being stripped of assets. I’m 100% in favor of a general strike to save the UK.

YouGov  Shows That Public Opinion on the Strike Is Divided

A survey shared at the beginning of June by YouGov shows that public opinion on the railway workers’ protest in the United Kingdom was divided. Leo Rudolph, who is 36 years old, stated in an interview with Reuters that he supports the protest and argues that the strike should last for a considerable time, as this would be the only way for workers to demand their constitutional rights.

Destructive Inflation

Alongside the strikes and discontent of numerous workers, the United Kingdom is also facing destructive inflation caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. All of this is contributing to a shortage of workers in the country, which is causing prices  of services to rise. Thus, post-Brexit warnings indicate that the country may be nearing a recession – or may have already entered one.

The government insists on saying that, even while assisting the neediest families, they would not be able to provide wages that are above inflation because that would exacerbate the crisis in which the country is sinking. Johnson claims that the long-term impacts of higher wages are even more significant and that they must analyze activities to prevent future problems.
