Heated Reservoir Beneath Balkan Caves Surprises Researchers and Promises Unprecedented Scientific Advancements

A geological discovery of great international impact was recently confirmed in the Balkans, between Greece and Albania, capturing the attention of the global scientific community.

The largest subterranean thermal lake ever recorded was found in a remote area, as reported by researchers from the Neuron Foundation, from the Czech Republic, in early 2025.

According to official measurements, the subterranean lake — named Neuron Lake — has 138 meters in length, 42 in width, and a volume of over 8,300 cubic meters of hot water. This is equivalent to about 3.5 Olympic swimming pools.

Furthermore, specialists emphasize that this discovery may revolutionize the understanding of subterranean hydrogeological systems, directly influencing studies on climate, thermal energy, and environmental conservation.

Technical Expedition Reveals Geologically Complex Lake

Initially, the discovery originated from an expedition conducted in 2021, led by spelunker Marek Audy, from the Neuron Foundation team.

During the visit, researchers noted unusual vapors emerging from a limestone cavity, located between two mountainous terrains of the Dinaric Alps — an area marked by geographic and historical isolation.

Subsequently, in 2024, the group returned to the site with new equipment funded by the foundation. At that time, they used cutting-edge technology, such as drones, sonars, and LiDAR scanners, to obtain more accurate measurements.

Consequently, in February 2025, the final data confirmed not only the existence but also the extraordinary dimension of the lake, along with its connection to neighboring thermal springs.

Scientific Importance of the Discovery Attracts International Attention

Since then, the finding has been widely discussed in academic circles. This is because the Neuron Lake offers a unique opportunity to understand subterranean ecosystems still unexplored.

According to a technical note from the Neuron Foundation, the water found in the lake has unique thermal and mineral properties, with an average temperature exceeding 40 °C.

Moreover, water currents connecting the lake to external springs suggest an active and complex hydrogeological system. Thus, the discovery may be essential for understanding subterranean flows and geothermal dynamics in the Balkans.

For Marek Audy, the finding “could transform our understanding of extreme environments and the adaptation of life in isolated regions,” which further emphasizes the scientific value of this discovery.

Discovery Site Reflects Heritage of Conflict and Abandonment

Despite its importance, the region where the lake is located has been neglected by governments and scientists for decades, due to its delicate political position.

The border between Albania and Greece has been marked by decades of tension, ethnic conflicts, and territorial disputes dating back to World War II.

These disputes hindered access to the area and delayed technical and scientific explorations, as reported by local historians and environmentalists.

Only in recent years, with greater stability in the region, have foreign researchers been able to initiate more in-depth investigations.

Future Opportunities for Science, Tourism, and Sustainability

Although the initial focus is academic, this discovery may also stimulate investments in scientific tourism and ecotourism in the region.

With a controlled exploration plan, local governments could combine economic development with environmental preservation, creating safe routes for visitation and monitored studies.

Still, scientists warn: any commercial use of the area must adhere to strict environmental protection standards and maintain the integrity of the lake.

Therefore, Neuron is already coordinating with universities and local entities to create a protected zone that allows research but prevents degradation.

What Does the Future Hold for European Science?

Researchers believe that this discovery could represent a turning point for European and global science.

The combination of isolation, extreme conditions, and hydrogeological richness creates an ideal environment for new scientific experiments, especially in the fields of geology, microbiology, and climatology.

Moreover, this find joins a series of recent discoveries worldwide — such as the salt lake in Turkish caves, found in 2023, and the subterranean thermal system in Chile, mapped in 2022.

These events reinforce the need for global policies on sustainable subterranean research, which combine knowledge advancement with environmental preservation.

Meanwhile, the eyes of science are turned to the Balkans. The expectation is that the Neuron Lake will inspire new expeditions and large-scale advancements.
