The world’s longest sea bridge spans 55 kilometers and is located in China, connecting Hong Kong to Macau and the city of Zhuhai. To give you an idea of the scale of this bridge over the sea, imagine a structure between the centers of São Paulo (SP) and Jundiaí (SP), for example. Another reference is that it is a little more than four times longer than the Rio-Niterói Bridge.

Largest Sea Bridge In The World Was Inaugurated In 2018

On one hand, the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge is a marvel of modern engineering, designed to enhance economic integration and transportation convenience. On the other hand, its development came with significant challenges and criticisms that highlight the complexity of balancing technological and infrastructure progress with social and environmental responsibility.

Inaugurated in 2018, after nine years of construction, the world’s longest sea bridge connects Lantau Island in Hong Kong to the former Portuguese colony of Macau and the city of Zhuhai in Guangdong province, the most dynamic region in China. The bridge is, in fact, a combination of bridges, tunnels, and artificial islands.

The structure includes an underwater tunnel of nearly seven kilometers between two artificial islands, as well as viaducts and roads that connect the cities in question, the three main coastal cities in southern China.

About 30 kilometers of the bridge’s length crosses the sea of the Pearl River Delta. A section of 6.7 kilometers dives into an underwater tunnel, which passes between two artificial islands to allow for the passage of ships. After that, there are roads, viaducts, and land tunnels.

More Than 144 Thousand People Crossed The World’s Longest Sea Bridge In February

The bridge was developed to facilitate transportation and integration between the cities, which are autonomous regions, and mainland China. To give you an idea, until then, the journey between Zhuhai and Hong Kong, for example, took four hours.

By crossing the bridge, it takes half an hour. In February 2024, more than 144 thousand people crossed the border checkpoint in Zhuhai on the fourth day of the Chinese Lunar New Year holidays – the highest number since the bridge’s inauguration.

In terms of structure, the world’s longest sea bridge in China was developed with specific features to ensure its resilience to extreme conditions, including earthquakes and typhoons, two types of natural disasters common in the region where it is situated. This ability to withstand extreme events is essential, given its strategic location and importance for economic integration and transport in the Pearl River Delta area.

China Uses Unique Technologies For The Project

To allow the bridge to withstand earthquakes, its construction utilized advanced seismic engineering technologies, such as the installation of dampers and expansion joints that can absorb the forces generated by tremors, reducing structural damage.

The structure was designed to flex and absorb seismic energies, rather than resist rigidly, which reduces the risk of catastrophic failures during an earthquake.

To prepare the bridge for typhoons, which can bring extremely strong winds and heavy rains, it was necessary to select high-quality construction materials and use aerodynamic design for the sections exposed to air.

This helps reduce the impact of strong winds on the structure, ensuring its stability and safety even under adverse conditions. Additionally, the height of the bridge was designed to ensure that it remains above the waves generated by typhoons, reducing the risk of damage from water.
