On social media, the Minister of Infrastructure, Tarcísio Gomes de Freitas, celebrated the TCU’s decision and stated that the auction for leasing the terminals should take place later this year. “Attention Bahia, auction ahead. TCU approved leasing projects at the Port of Aratu. ATU12 and ATU18, intended for the movement of minerals and vegetables, will be auctioned still in 2020,” wrote Gomes.

The ATU12 is a brownfield project of approximately 190,000 m², with an expected average throughput of two million tons/year. Investments of approximately R$ 250 million are planned over a period of 25 years, for interventions such as the construction of a new warehouse; implementation of a system for treating liquid effluent from the pier, including drainage; dredging to deepen the mooring berth; acquisition of equipment for unloading ships; and expansion of the conveyor system, generating about 5,000 jobs in Bahia.

The ATU18, also for solid bulk, has a planned area of 51,600 m² and is designed to handle 8 million tons/year by the end of the contract. The planned investments in this terminal are R$ 120 million over a 15-year contract, with the construction of five new storage silos; expansion and widening of the platform; dredging to deepen the mooring berth; acquisition of equipment for loading ships; and acquisition of the conveyor system, expected to generate more than 2,000 direct and indirect jobs in Bahia.

According to the database of the Bahia Ports Authority (Codeba), from January to July 2020, 236 cargo ships docked at the Port of Aratu, moving a volume of 2,787,157 tons of liquid and gaseous products, and solid bulk such as iron ore, manganese and copper, urea, fertilizers, naphtha, propylene, and copper concentrate.

Linked to the National Secretariat of Ports and Waterway Transportation of the Ministry of Infrastructure, Codeba is responsible for the administration and commercial exploitation of organized ports in Bahia: Aratu-Candeias, Ilhéus, and Salvador.
