The Theme Was Already Addressed Transversally and Now Gains Even More Prominence

Rio de Janeiro, November 17 – Ocyan, a company in the oil and gas sector, will launch a new affinity group, in addition to the existing groups in its Diversity and Inclusion Program, now fully dedicated to discussing and implementing actions in support of racial issues. The launch is part of the company’s awareness actions during the week in which Black Consciousness is celebrated. The program launched two years ago was recognized by participants in a Reptrak survey – 81.5% agreed that the company advanced its approaches to the subject in the past year.

The commander of the ODN II drillship, Ricardo Amoêdo, who has been with Ocyan for 10 years, will lead the group. He began his career as a nautical officer trainee, held other positions as a second nautical officer, and eventually reached his current position as long-haul commander. Ricardo was responsible for the construction project of Ocyan’s 4 drillships, where he was commander of the NORBE VIII, NORBE VI, and the ODN II.

“As the leader of the Race Affinity Group, I will have a team, and this team will consist of volunteers. I have the duty and obligation to listen to them to combat prejudice. This is a cultural issue that requires a lot of education”, he comments.

In addition to the group, the company will host a live event with activist and educator, Benilda Brito. Benilda was a Human Rights teacher and has participated in feminist and black movements since the 1980s. She currently coordinates the Human Rights Program at ODARA – Institute of Black Women in Salvador – BA.

The Ocyan Diversity and Inclusion Program was launched in 2019. Since then, the focus has been on mobilizing and raising awareness among company members. Now, the challenge lies in sustaining the messages and consolidating the project through practical actions.

“We have reached a new moment in the program, and the launch of the race group reinforces that we are on the right path by deepening diversity actions within the company. In 2020, more than ever, the topic of racial issues prevailed globally, and this encourages us to advance further within the company. Companies are part of society, and social discussions need to resonate effectively within them”, highlights Nir Lander, Director of People and Management at Ocyan.

In 2021, the leaders of the affinity groups Equity of Gender, People with Disabilities, and Race will have internal mentors for exchanging experiences. “The mentors are part of the company’s senior leadership. The primary goal is to bring the debate even closer between key decision-making points and to promote experiences on management and leadership among them and their mentees”, points out Nir.

The consulting firm Mais Diversidade, which has supported Ocyan since the program’s structuring, has formed a new partnership with the company to assist in recruitment processes, attracting diverse candidates for strategic positions, as was the case with the internship program this year, where 47% of the candidates hired in the process were black or brown.
