The Minister of Infrastructure, Tarcísio Gomes de Freitas, Expressed Optimism About Railway Expansion and the BR do Mar Project in São Paulo
The government held on Tuesday, the 13th, the auction of three port terminals, two in the Port of Santos (SP) and one in the Port of Paranaguá (PR). The total collected with the grants was R$ 148.5 million. The Minister of Infrastructure, Tarcísio Gomes de Freitas, present at the auction of the liquid and fertilizer terminals, expressed optimism about railway expansion and the BR do Mar project in São Paulo.
In railway expansion, Freitas estimates that the railway network in São Paulo should motivate more than R$ 7 billion in investment, which will increase its transport capacity from 35 million to 75 million tons.

According to Freitas, this expansion is in the final analysis by the Federal Court of Accounts (TCU), awaiting a decision from the process’s rapporteur.
“The railway program is progressing rapidly, and I am confident that this will double the participation of the railway mode in the transport matrix,” the minister assesses.
With the BR do Mar project, the goal is to transport 2.7 million containers per year by December 2020, through cabotage, and to increase the fleet of vessels dedicated to this operation by 40% – characterized by maritime transport along the country’s coastline.
Freitas believes that the Ministry’s project is very well structured and has the potential to drive this mode of navigation, which has been growing in recent years. He estimates a 30% increase in the coming years.
Just in the first half of the year, 7.8 million tons of goods entered or left the Port of Santos on cabotage ships.
Former Area of Libra Terminals in the Port of Santos Will Be Divided
The Federal Government has plans for the area previously occupied by Libra Terminals in the Port of Santos. According to Diogo Piloni, national secretary of Ports and Aquatic Transport of the Ministry of Infrastructure (Minfra), the land is expected to be re-auctioned as two cellulose terminals, after the auction of the liquid and fertilizer terminals.
A public consultation on the matter is scheduled by the Government in the next 20 days. “We completed the studies on the suitability from the perspective of the Port’s demand and identified that the most fitting profile is cellulose,” said Diogo.
