Merchant Navy Entrance Exam Is Open Until May 23. New Public Competition for High School Aims to Fill About 293 Vacancies for Candidates of Both Sexes.
On Friday (10), the announcement of the Merchant Navy entrance exam for admission, in 2025, to the Officer Training Schools (Efomm) was published. The public competition, which is already open for registrations, aims to fill 293 vacancies. There are 174 positions offered to study at the Almirante Graça Aranha Instruction Center (Ciaga) in Rio de Janeiro (RJ), and 119 at the Almirante Braz de Aguiar Instruction Center (Ciaba) in Belém (PA).
Who Can Compete in the Merchant Navy High School Entrance Exam?
Participants in the Merchant Navy entrance exam must be candidates of both sexes with a high school diploma and aged between 17 and 23 years. It is also necessary to be single and not have children or dependents. Additionally, to participate in the public competition, it is required to be a native Brazilian, have completed, with satisfactory performance, a high school course or equivalent, in an officially recognized institution, by February 3, 2025. The minimum height required is 1.54 m and maximum of 2.00 m.
Due to international agreements, six additional vacancies in the high school entrance exam at each Instruction Center are reserved for foreign students. If any of these Merchant Navy vacancies are not filled, they may be occupied by a Brazilian candidate.

Candidates who choose to take the knowledge test in cities located in the South, Southeast, and Central-West regions, as defined in the announcement, will compete exclusively for vacancies at CIAGA.
Candidates who choose to take the knowledge test in cities located in the North and Northeast regions, as defined in the announcement, will compete solely for vacancies at CIABA.

To compete, interested parties must register exclusively on the Merchant Navy website. The registration deadline for the public competition ends on May 23, at 11:59 PM (Brasília time).
The fee is R$ 65. In the first phase of the high school entrance exam, on August 3 and 4, candidates will take written tests with 80 questions on Portuguese, English, mathematics, and physics, in addition to an essay. There will be applications in 20 cities spread across all regions of Brazil:

The other stages of the Merchant Navy entrance exam include a psychophysical exam from October 3 to November 14, a physical fitness test from November 25 to November 4, and a period for adjustment and document verification from January 13 to 31, 2025.
Study Routine for Approved Candidates in the Public Competition
Enrollment and the start of the course for those approved in the high school entrance exam are scheduled for February 3. There are options for training in two areas: nautical, focused on handling deck equipment, navigation, and communication, and machinery, focused on operating, maintaining, and managing the machines, engines, and equipment that comprise the various systems of a ship.
Those approved in the Merchant Navy entrance exam will be entitled to uniforms, accommodation, meals, and medical-dental, psychological, social, and religious assistance, in addition to a remuneration of around R$ 1,500.
The academic training – six semesters of classes, in a boarding regime, is followed by a minimum 12-month internship period undertaken on merchant vessels. After graduation, students receive a bachelor’s degree in nautical sciences and become part of the Reserve Officers Corps of the Brazilian Navy, at the rank of second lieutenant.
