Italian Navy Launches Patrol Ship Ugolino Vivaldi, with 95 Meters, Integrated Cockpit and Cutting-Edge Technology, Strengthening Maritime Surveillance and Defense.

The Italian Navy has taken an important step in modernizing its fleet with the launch of the Ugolino Vivaldi, an ocean patrol vessel designed to meet contemporary demands for maritime surveillance.

With a length of 95 meters and capacity for 93 crew members, the vessel combines cutting-edge technology and automation, enhancing efficiency and safety in operations.

The program plans to build four units, all coordinated by the Naval Armaments Directorate, and produced by the joint venture Orizzonte Sistemi Navali, composed of Fincantieri (51%) and Leonardo (49%).

This partnership ensures high standards of engineering and technological innovation for each vessel.

Ugolino Vivaldi: Integrated Technology and Innovative Cockpit

The Ugolino Vivaldi features an integrated naval cockpit, developed through cooperation between Fincantieri NexTech and Leonardo.

This system allows only two operators—pilot and co-pilot—to control engines, rudders, platform systems, and some combat functions.

Advanced automation provides greater agility in maneuvers, precision in operations, and enhanced safety for the crew.

Furthermore, the vessel incorporates modern solutions for monitoring, communication, and systems control that elevate its operational capacity to a new level compared to previous vessels.

Strategic Functions and Versatility

The Ugolino Vivaldi is designed to perform multiple strategic functions at sea, meeting Italy’s needs for maritime surveillance and protection.

Among its main tasks is ocean patrol, ensuring a constant presence in strategic areas and monitoring international waters.

Additionally, the vessel plays a role in merchant traffic security, ensuring that critical trade routes remain protected and free from threats.

Another essential role is the defense of the exclusive economic zone, preserving Italy’s rights over natural and maritime resources in its jurisdiction.

The ship is also prepared to respond quickly to environmental incidents, such as pollutant spills, providing operational capacity to minimize ecological impacts.

With this combination of functions, the Ugolino Vivaldi becomes a key element in Italian naval strategy, uniting security, economic protection, and environmental defense in a single modern and automated vessel.

Ceremony and Tribute to Naval History

The launch took place at the Fincantieri shipyard in Riva Trigoso, with the presence of civil and military authorities.

Present were Vice Admiral Fabio Gregori, Deputy Chief of the Navy Staff, the Chief of Staff of Liguria, Massimiliano Nannini, and the Mayor of Sestri Levante, Francesco Solinas.

The ceremony was marked by a historical tribute, with the godmother Alessandra Marsigli Cavriani, granddaughter of Lieutenant Commander Alessandro Cavriani, who disappeared during the sinking of the Ugolino Vivaldi in 1943 and was posthumously awarded the Gold Medal for Military Valor.

This connection reinforces the continuity between tradition and innovation within the Italian Navy.

Patrol Ship Ugolino Vivaldi: A Milestone for the Italian Shipbuilding Industry

The Ugolino Vivaldi program is a milestone for Fincantieri, consolidating its position as a global leader in defense vessel production.

As part of the FCX family, the ship combines technological innovation, automation, and operational efficiency, demonstrating the Italian industry’s ability to unite naval tradition and modern solutions.

The construction of these units reinforces Italy’s presence in the international defense market and highlights the national expertise in advanced naval engineering.

With its integrated systems and high level of automation, the Ugolino Vivaldi prepares the Italian Navy for the challenges of the 21st century.

The vessel is capable of operating in complex missions with a reduced crew, providing flexibility and effectiveness in patrol operations, securing trade routes, and responding to environmental emergencies.

The project demonstrates how technological innovation, automation, and strategic planning can come together to modernize the fleet, ensuring that the Italian Navy remains competitive and ready to protect its maritime interests.

The launch of the Ugolino Vivaldi symbolizes not only a technological advancement but also Italy’s commitment to maritime surveillance, security, and environmental defense.

With four units planned, the fleet gains expanded operational capacity, while the Italian shipbuilding industry strengthens its global position and keeps alive the tradition of excellence in the sector.
