The Two Vessels Are at the Rio de Janeiro Naval Arsenal and Will Be Finished by a Shipyard or Company, But Within the Arsenal
Last Tuesday (2/7), during the 2nd Military Ship Maintenance Seminar, organized by SOBENA (Brazilian Society of Naval Engineering), the director of AMRJ, Rear Admiral José Luiz Rangel, declared that the Navy intends to hire a company or a shipyard to complete the construction of two patrol ships.
The vessels are the NPa (Patrol Ship) Maracanã, which has already been launched and is currently docked at the Rio de Janeiro Naval Arsenal, on Cobra Island, and the NPa Mangaratiba, which is in a shed at a less advanced stage of construction.
These vessels were part of the Eisa S.A shipyard’s scope but were not completed, and with the company’s closure, they were transferred to the Naval Arsenal.
The ships belong to the Macaé class and are 54.2 meters long and displace 500 tons. This class already has two units in operation: The NPa Macaé and the Macau.

The Navy plans that after hiring the company, the works will be completed within a year and a half or two years, and that the resumption of the works will attract large companies.
The equipment for the vessels has already been purchased and stored at the Arsenal, according to the Navy.
Full Shipyard
The director of the Navy shipyard declared that, despite all difficulties, he has been able to meet deadlines and that the shipyard’s current portfolio is quite extensive.
Today at the Arsenal, there are two more docked ships: the NPo Almirante Maximiano and the NApOc Ary Rongel, which have been undergoing repairs since May, with completion expected in September.
The current workforce at the Rio de Janeiro Naval Arsenal shipyard consists of 2,700 employees, both military and civilian.
In addition to the ships, the shipyard’s portfolio also involves repairs to three submarines: the Tikuna, the Tamoio, and the Timbira.
The Navy has planned other projects for the shipyard, such as revitalization works on three frigates, the Liberal, União, and Independência, related to the so-called “Phoenix” project, the docking of the multipurpose helicopter carrier Atlântico, which is expected to last for a year or a year and a half, and large-scale repairs on the Corveta Barroso, which is expected to last 2 years and begin in June 2020.
