Discover How Mato Grosso do Sul Became a Reference in Renewable Energy in Brazil, Expanding Its Capacity by 11% and Investing Heavily in Solar, Hydroelectric, and Biomass Energy for a More Sustainable Future.

Expansion of Energy Generation in Mato Grosso do Sul

Mato Grosso do Sul Expands Energy Generation by 11% and Reinforces Sustainability

Mato Grosso do Sul has made significant progress in its energy matrix in 2024, increasing its installed capacity by 11%. This way, the state now has a total of 9,843 MW of energy, establishing itself as one of the leaders in renewable energy production in Brazil.

Furthermore, this growth reflects the state’s strong commitment to energy transition, with a predominance of sustainable sources.

According to the website Diário Digital, between 2020 and 2024, the state’s generation capacity grew by an average of 8% per year. This advancement was driven by state policies and private investments in the renewable energy sector.

Predominance of Renewable Energy

Currently, more than 90% of the energy capacity of Mato Grosso do Sul comes from renewable sources. Among them, the highlights are:

  • Hydroelectric Energy (54.5%): Main source of electricity generation in the state.
  • Biomass (24.3%): Primarily sourced from the agro-industrial sector.
  • Solar Energy (15.3%): A rapidly growing sector.

Moreover, with only 5.9% of energy coming from fossil sources, Mato Grosso do Sul stands out as a model in energy sustainability and reduction of environmental impact.

The Impact of Solar Energy Growth in the State

Growth of Solar Energy and Distributed Generation

Photovoltaic Solar Energy has become one of the highlights of the electric sector in the state. In this regard, distributed generation, which involves small producers and consumption units, grew 53% in 2024, reaching 132,458 installed units.

Thus, solar energy accounts for 99.7% of the installed capacity in this segment.

According to the website Canal Solar, in 2019, Mato Grosso do Sul had just over 20,000 distributed generation units. This number has exponentially grown in the past five years due to greater accessibility of technology and tax incentives.

Additionally, residential consumers lead this expansion, accounting for 45% of the installed capacity and 81% of the distributed generation enterprises.

To enable this growth, tax incentives and financing have encouraged the installation of solar panels in homes.

Comparison Between Distributed Generation and Centralized Generation

Centralized Generation and Sustainability

Despite the advancement of decentralized solar energy, centralized generation (large power plants) still accounts for 84.7% of electrical production in the state.

However, Mato Grosso do Sul is following global trends and increasing investments in sustainable power plants.

According to the website Energia Hoje, between 2018 and 2023, the installed capacity of centralized solar energy generation in the state increased by over 300%. This growth placed the state among the states with the highest expansion in this sector.

Currently, 88.8% of the projects in development in the state electric sector belong to photovoltaic solar energy, reinforcing the strategy of diversification and sustainability.

The Future of Sustainable Energy in Mato Grosso do Sul

Mato Grosso do Sul and the Future of Sustainable Energy

With the increase in energy capacity and investment in renewable sources, Mato Grosso do Sul consolidates itself as a benchmark in the Brazilian energy transition.

Moreover, state policies and the incentive to adopt clean energy drive economic development and reduce dependence on fossil fuels.

According to the portal Brasil Energia, by 2025, it is projected that the state will surpass 10,500 MW of installed capacity. Thus, Mato Grosso do Sul will establish itself as one of the largest producers of clean energy in the country.

The expansion of solar energy in Mato Grosso do Sul represents an example of sustainable growth. Thus, it benefits the population with cleaner and cheaper energy.

The trend indicates that new renewable energy projects will continue to emerge, promoting a more sustainable and efficient future for the state and Brazil.
