The MEC readjusted the Teachers' Salary Floor for 2024 by 3,62%, following the Floor Law. The objective is to enhance the careers of public basic education professionals in Brazil. However, many states and municipalities have difficulty complying with the law, generating protests from unions.

The Ministry of Education (MEC) made the readjustment of the National Salary Floor for Teachers official for 2024, announcing a raise of 3,62%. Established by the Floor Law, the minimum amount to be paid to public basic education professionals in Brazil is a MEC strategy to value careers in the education market. However, many states and municipalities face difficulties in complying with this law, generating debates and mobilizations by teachers' unions. Now, the adjustment aims to provide fairer remuneration for professionals in the sector.

New Salary Floor for teachers is made official by the MEC for the year 2024

The Ministry of Education (MEC) officially announced the adjustment of the National Salary Floor for Teachers for the year 2024, through the Ordinance no. 61/2024, published in the Official Gazette on January 31, 2024.

The National Salary Floor for Teachers, established by law, represents the minimum amount to be paid to public basic education professionals in Brazil.

Established by the Floor Law (Law 11.738/2008), this value is adjusted annually, as provided for by the same law.

The main objective of the Salary Floor is to enhance teachers' careers in the market, ensuring fair remuneration for these professionals.

Despite the law, several states and municipalities still face challenges in complying with this Salary Floor, causing a great mobilization of unions across Brazil for a fairer value paid to professionals in the education market. 

Adjustment of the minimum wage for teachers should now come into force in all states

The adjustment to the National Salary Floor for Public Teaching in Basic Education is calculated based on the difference in the Student Year Value of Urban Elementary Education (VAAF) from previous years.

For 2024, the value was readjusted by 3,62%, a salary increase important for teachers. Check out the new adjusted values:

• VAAF FUNDEB 2022 = R$ 5.129,80
• VAAF FUNDEB 2023 = R$ 5.315,56
• Percentage difference for updating the floor in 2024 = 3,62%
• Value of the Teaching Floor in 2024 = R$ 4.580,57

It is important to highlight that, according to current legislation, all states and municipalities must adapt the starting salaries of Education professionals to the values ​​stipulated by the National Salary Floor.

However, this change in the market will face obstacles in several parts of the country, as expected by the MEC and teachers.
