The Panelas II Dam, with a capacity of 16.9 million cubic meters and a total investment of R$ 114 million, was inaugurated this Tuesday in Cupira, where authorities highlighted its impact on flood control and regional water security.

Progress of the Works and Immediate Impact

The structure was delivered after the resumption of works in 2024, marking the completion of a long-awaited project to control water flow during floods. The ceremony gathered President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Minister Waldez Góes.

The president emphasized that the initiative benefits vulnerable urban areas of the Pernambuco South Forest because it enhances water security and reduces flood risks. He also highlighted that the dam represents stability in water supply to the affected municipalities.

Integration into the Flood Control System

Panelas II integrates the Flood Control System of the Una River Basin, which also includes Serro Azul, completed in 2016, and Gatos, resumed in February 2025. The works on the Igarapeba Dam will also be reactivated following the signing of a service order.

Minister Waldez Góes stated that the set of dams began during President Lula’s first terms, in partnership with former President Dilma Rousseff. According to him, Panelas II was halted for ten years until it was resumed with the New PAC.

Role of MIDR in Project Execution

The substitutive secretary of Water Security of MIDR, Bruno Cravo, explained that the agency coordinates the actions of the Water for All axis, responsible for the transfer of resources and technical monitoring of projects aimed at supply and flood control.

Cravo added that the MIDR team evaluates projects, monitors works, and executes transfers to enable state governments to develop the planned projects. He reinforced that this action is essential to ensure concrete advances.

Dam Capacity and Benefited Municipalities

The dam has a storage capacity of 16.9 million cubic meters, mainly aimed at flood control. The project benefits Belém de Maria, Catende, Palmares, Água Preta, and Barreiros, with a combined population of over 169 thousand inhabitants.

Of the total investment of R$ 114 million, R$ 66 million comes from the New PAC and the remainder is from the old PAC 2, ensuring financial continuity for the completion of the works and the implementation of measures outlined in the regional water planning.

Devo dizer que o reator nuclear que está sendo construído pela marinha brasileira pode servir para mover também grandes navios de transporte de cargas, trens de minérios de 500 vagões e metrôs e evidentemente seria um grande avanço tecnológico, em prol do clima,e dos desenvolvimentos social, econômico e político…
Pode ser usada para arrefecimento dos reatores a criogenia mas quem pode saber sobre isso são especialistas em evolução cultural…
