The Bus And Truck Chassis Factory Of Mercedes-Benz, Located In São Bernardo Do Campo, São Paulo, Announced The Reduction Of Production Shifts From Two To One Starting In May.

According To The Metalworkers Union Of ABC, The Single Shift Production Will Be Maintained For Two To Three Months. The Decision Was Made Due To Several Factors, Such As A Decrease In Demand, Parts Shortage, And High Interest Rates In The Country.

The Reduction In The Production Shift Was Confirmed By The Manufacturer, Which Had Previously Announced Collective Vacation For 300 Employees In April, As Well As Short Work Weeks At The Factory. Mercedes-Benz Employs About Eight Thousand Workers At The Facility, Including Six Thousand On The Production Line, Of Which Two Thousand Work The Second Shift.

Reasons For The Production Reduction

According To The Company, The Reduction In Production Is Largely Due To The Decrease In Demand For Trucks In The Brazilian Market, Which Is Experiencing The Effects Of The Economic Crisis And The Covid-19 Pandemic. Additionally, Parts Shortages And High Interest Costs Are Making Production Difficult At The Factory.

Measures For The Recovery Of The Sector

The Metalworkers Union Of ABC Highlighted That, For The Recovery Of The Sector, It Is Urgent To Open New Modalities Of BNDES Financing And To Reduce Interest Rates, Which Could Help Improve Production And Generate More Jobs In The Truck And Auto Parts Sectors. The Union’s Executive Director, Aroaldo Oliveira Da Silva, Stated That He Is Already Negotiating With The Company To Evaluate Measures And Alternatives To Navigate This Period.

In 2022, There Was An Increase In Demand For Trucks In The Country, Due To The Transition To The Pollutant Emissions Standard Euro 6. However, Sales Of New Trucks In Brazil Already Fell In March Of This Year Compared To The Same Period Last Year, According To Data From Fenabrave.

The Reduction Of The Production Shift At The Mercedes-Benz Plant In São Paulo Is Another Reflection Of The Current Economic Situation In The Country. The Decrease In Demand For Trucks, Parts Shortages, And High Interest Costs Are Making Production Difficult At The Facility. To Aid In The Recovery Of The Sector, It Is Essential That Measures Be Taken To Improve Production And Generate More Jobs In The Truck And Auto Parts Sectors. The Negotiation Between The Company And The Union Is A Great Initiative To Find Alternatives To Get Through This Difficult Period.
