Mercedes-Benz, The German Multinational, Claims Sale of One of the 300 SRL Uhlenhaut Coupés for About €135 Million

Last week, news outlets from abroad confirmed that Mercedes-Benz sold one of its rarest cars, the 300 SRL Uhlenhaut Coupé, through a secret auction for a price between €130 and €135 million. This sale price made it the most expensive vehicle in the world. During the event, Mercedes-Benz neither confirmed nor denied the rumors of the car’s sale.

The funds raised from the automobile will be used to initiate a program that will fund scholarships, which will be called the “Mercedes-Benz Fund.”

The decision to sell one of the two exclusive sports vehicles from Mercedes-Benz was made based on a very strong rationale to support a good cause. “The funds from the car’s auction will finance an international scholarship program,” said Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Källenius.

The Mercedes-Benz Fund will be divided into two groups, for school and university students, focusing on encouraging students to conduct environmental research and projects in their regions. Mercedes-Benz also stated that it will invest more money in the program, in addition to what was raised from the sale of the 300 SLR.

The scholarship program funded by the money raised from the sale of the 300 SLR will be designed and managed together with a partner whose name has not been revealed.
“The hidden funder agreed that the 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupé will have free access to be displayed to the public on special occasions, while the second car from the original 300 SLR Coupé line will remain in the company’s possession and will be displayed at the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart,” said Mercedes-Benz chief Marcus Breitschwerdt.

Most Expensive Vehicle in History

The Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupé was used as the company’s chief test car. With the sale of the vehicle, it takes the place of the 1963 Ferrari 250 GTO, which was sold in 2018 for US$ 70 million (R$ 359.1 million).
The 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupé is a derivative with a hardtop body of the 300 SLR that dominated the racetracks in the early 1950s. This vehicle was already an evolution of the 300 SL that originated the term “Silver Arrows” for Mercedes-Benz competition cars.
With the rise of the 300 SLR in racing in 1955, Mercedes decided to develop a variation of the car with a hardtop to compete in other races in the following years. Two units of the famous vehicle were built by the company. However, an accident involving the car at the 1955 24 Hours of Le Mans resulted in the deaths of over 80 people, including the car’s driver, Frenchman Pierre Levegh.
After the tragic accident, Mercedes-Benz withdrew its vehicles from motorsport until the mid-1980s. Thus, the two models of the 300 SLR coupé built at the time never competed in a race. The name “Uhlenhaut Coupé” was given because one of the two vehicles was used by Rudolf Uhlenhaut, the head of the testing department of Mercedes.
The vehicle, which was built with a tubular steel chassis, aluminum body, and a 3.0 inline-eight engine producing 310 hp, was one of the fastest cars of its time, reaching 290 km/h.
