The sea kept an invaluable secret for over 300 years. A group of divers recently found over a thousand gold and silver coins belonging to an ancient Spanish fleet that sank in the 18th century. The discovery, the result of a professional diving operation, was described by experts as one of the most important maritime recoveries in recent decades, with an estimated value exceeding one million dollars.
The discovery rekindles global fascination with one of the greatest naval tragedies of the colonial era: the sinking of the so-called “Treasure Fleet of 1715”, which vanished amidst a devastating hurricane while returning to Europe loaded with riches extracted from the Americas.
The Shipwreck That Marked Spanish Naval History
In the summer of 1715, a fleet composed of 12 Spanish ships set sail from the port of Havana towards the Iberian Peninsula. They were transporting the fruits of years of colonial exploration: silver bars, gold coins, emeralds, porcelains, and spices sent from Mexico and Peru.

The crossing, however, ended in tragedy. On July 31, a historically significant hurricane struck the fleet out at sea, destroying 11 of the 12 ships. Hundreds of crew members perished, and what remained sank within hours. For centuries, the wreckage remained hidden beneath layers of sand and sediment.
At the time, the disaster represented a colossal loss for the Spanish Crown. It is estimated that the total value of the cargo exceeded the equivalent of 400 million dollars today, an essential part of the empire’s finances.
A Dive That Made History
More than three centuries later, professional divers returned to explore the area under official authorization. The team, composed of marine archaeologists and underwater recovery specialists, conducted the operation during the summer, under ideal weather conditions.
While sifting through the seabed, the divers found metal fragments and small coins covered by sediment. As they carefully excavated, they realized they were facing a true treasure: 1,003 coins in gold and silver, some with visible inscriptions and coats of arms of colonial Spain.
According to technical reports, many of the coins were stacked and embedded in mineral concretions, indicating they had been protected by sand deposits for centuries. Among the recovered objects, there were also small nautical artifacts, fragments of ceramics, and corroded parts of metal chests used for transporting the cargo.
Historical And Scientific Value Of The Discovery
More than the monetary value, the find offers a new window into maritime archaeology and colonial trade of the early 18th century. The coins, minted in different mints of Spanish America — such as Mexico, Lima, and Potosí — reveal the economic and political routes of an empire that dominated the Atlantic.
Experts highlight that many of the recovered pieces are pieces of eight, popularly known as pieces of eight, a symbol of global trade and the foundation of various modern currencies. These coins were the “dollar” of the time: they circulated between Europe, Africa, and Asia as a standard of universal value.
Marine archaeologists explain that, due to being in shallow waters, the wreckage of the fleet has been partially displaced over the centuries by storms and currents, which explains the dispersion of the finds. Still, the recent discovery is one of the most complete since the 1960s, when the first systematic search operations began.
Preservation And Destination Of The Treasure
According to maritime heritage regulations, all recovered material must undergo a rigorous cleaning and conservation process, conducted by specialists in ancient metals. After analysis and documentation, some of the coins will be displayed in museums dedicated to naval history and underwater archaeology.
The companies and divers involved in the recovery operate under government license, and the material will be evaluated by authorities to determine what percentage will remain under public custody and what can be allocated to the discoverers, according to local laws.
The leader of the recovery team emphasized in an interview that the main goal is not profit, but the preservation of historical memory: each recovered coin represents the physical testament of a period of maritime expansion, exploration, and human tragedies.

Discoveries like this continue to capture the collective imagination. The combination of the ocean’s mystery, the danger of expeditions, and the historical value of the finds creates an irresistible narrative.
