Free Course Recognized by CAPES Offers 246 Places in Universities Across the Country for Public School Teachers Who Want to Specialize in Sociology. Selection is Fully Online and Registrations Go Until October 18.

Basic education teachers can apply for 246 places in the Professional Master’s in Sociology in National Network (PROFSOCIO), with fully online selection and registrations until October 18.

The course is free, has a duration of 24 months, is in-person and recognized by CAPES, from the Ministry of Education (MEC).

The national coordination is from the Federal University of Ceará (UFC) and the enrollment is valid for the class of 2026.

What is PROFSOCIO and Who Can Participate

Focused on the continuing education of teachers, PROFSOCIO integrates the ProEB (Professional Master’s Program for the Qualification of Public Basic Education Teachers).

The priority is for teachers currently working in public schools, whether permanent or temporary, who work in Human Sciences and Social Applied Sciences and have a degree recognized by MEC.

If there are leftover places, associated institutions may admit teachers from private schools, limited to 30% of the total enrolled from public schools in the unit.

As an online course, classes take place at the associated universities, following the local calendar.

Upon completing the required and elective credits and defending the final paper, the student receives the title of Master in Sociology.

Research Lines and Academic Focus

Research must relate to one of the three lines of the program, structured to engage with the challenges of teaching Sociology in basic education.

In Education, School and Society, the emphasis is on the relationship between public policies, inequalities, and school life.

Youth and Contemporary Issues examines the youth condition and topics such as gender, culture, work, human rights, and media.

In contrast, Teaching Practices and Curricular Content focuses on methodologies, teaching materials, teacher training, and use of technologies in the classroom.

Distribution of Places by Institution

The 246 places are distributed among 16 institutions present in all regions of the country:

Fundação Joaquim Nabuco (FUNDAJ), Recife – PE: 15 places
Universidade Estadual do Vale do Acaraú (UVA), Sobral – CE: 15 places
Universidade Estadual de Londrina (UEL), Londrina – PR: 23 places

How Will the Selection for the Free Master’s Program Be

The selection process is remote and occurs in two stages, both eliminatory and classificatory.

In the first stage, the committee evaluates the letter of intent, a central document to present the intended theme, the relationship with teaching practice, and the fit within the chosen research line.

This evaluation counts for 40% of the final score and requires a minimum score of 7.0.

The second stage consists of the virtual defense of the letter of intent via video conference, with questioning from the committee about the research proposal, professional background, and adherence to the course.

In this phase, the weight is 60%, also requiring a minimum score of 7.0.

The final score results from the weighted average between the two stages.

The tie-breaking criteria consider the highest score in the defense and, subsequently, the age of the candidate.

Structure of the Course and Expectations

The formative load combines mandatory and elective subjects, totaling 360 hours, in addition to qualification and defense of the final paper.

Each institution defines the calendar of in-person classes, which can occur from Monday to Saturday, at specified times.

The area of concentration is Teaching of Sociology, with production aimed at teaching methodologies, materials, and pedagogical interventions with direct application in schools.

Although free, the course is part of the stricto sensu graduate program and follows the rules of each associated university.

Depending on budgetary availability, scholarships may be offered through specific calls, prioritizing public school teachers, including those in probationary periods or temporary contracts.

Relevance of the Master’s Program for Teachers

In addition to institutional recognition and a stricto sensu title, the master’s program encourages the production of applied knowledge for everyday school life.

Projects can result in teaching sequences, teaching materials, lesson guides, digital resources, and evaluation protocols.

The proposal strengthens a national network of practices and research in Teaching Sociology, promoting exchange among institutions and diverse regional realities, which enriches teaching practice and impacts learning.

Ideal Profile of Candidates

The program is suitable for teachers who teach Sociology or related subjects and who wish to systematize their strategies, evaluate results, and improve methodologies.

Educators who work as area coordinators, trainers, or in interdisciplinary projects also have a compatible profile with the research lines.

For those who need to balance work and study, the in-person format at regional centers and online selection help in organizing their routine.

How to Enroll in PROFSOCIO 2026

Registrations must be made exclusively online, from August 19 to October 18, 2025, through an electronic form provided by the program.

The candidate must choose the associated institution where they will attend in-person classes and attach complete documentation in a single file, including the letter of intent as required in the announcement.
