The Metalworkers of GM in São Paulo Are Claiming Salary Adjustments, Salary Floor Correction, Food Allowance, Participation in Results, and Advance of 13th Salary

Yesterday morning, Wednesday (10/13), metalworkers from General Motors, at the factory in São Caetano do Sul, in the state of São Paulo, decided to continue the strike for salary and rights. The strike began on October 1st. Unanimously, the category rejected the counterproposal presented by the automaker to the union on Friday (10/9). As a result, the strike at GM reached its thirteenth day. Read this news as well: General Motors Factory in São Paulo Will Undergo Modernization. Metalworkers’ Strike and Claims

The collective bargaining was presented by GM last week. The automaker wanted the strike to be considered abusive – when this happens, the strikers may have their salaries deducted, for example. Of the three points of disagreement between the union and GM, two were granted as the metalworkers wanted.

The Labor Court determined the maintenance of the clause that guarantees job security for employees with occupational diseases – those linked to work, such as repetitive strain injuries. The annual deduction for union contributions was also maintained. The president of the Metalworkers’ Union of São Caetano do Sul, Aparecido Inácio da Silva, known as Cidão, says that the court’s decision will be taken to a meeting today, Thursday (9/14), in the morning.

Metalworkers Rejected GM’s Proposal

This Wednesday morning (13), the workers at GM in São Caetano rejected a partial agreement proposal made between the union and the company during a Labor Court hearing on Friday (8). The decision to oppose the agreement was made in a meeting held early in the morning at the factory gate.

This proposal from GM established ten points of negotiation considered consensual, such as a 10.42% salary increase and also for the category’s minimum wage, meals in the company’s restaurant, and transportation allowance. The index refers to the INPC (National Consumer Price Index) accumulated until August 31 of this year.

The partial agreement also fixed the duration of social and economic clauses to one year, in addition to establishing the advance of the 13th salary for 2022 to February of next year and the return of a salary progression rule. These points were ratified by the Labor Court in the ruling this Wednesday. According to the Metalworkers’ Union of São Caetano, the disagreement regarding the clause that guarantees job security was the most important reason for the decision to reject the partial agreement.

General Motors resumed normal vehicle production at the factory in São Caetano do Sul, in São Paulo, on Monday, September 27, and in Gravataí, Rio Grande do Sul, on October 4, with the return of the second shift of work at both units. With this, the company hopes to recover at least part of the approximately 200,000 vehicles that it failed to produce during the period when the units were closed due to the semiconductor shortage.

In March of this year, GM had halted its productions at its factories in Brazil due to the semiconductor crisis, as the Onix models contain more than double these components compared to competitors in the same category. Santiago Chamorro, president of GM South America, says this is a very important moment for employees, unions, suppliers, dealers, and consumers. The company has high hopes that with the resumption of production in its factories in Brazil after the semiconductor crisis, the automaker will return to the positive pace it experienced at the beginning of the year.
