Strategic Work by Alberto Fernández will take natural gas from Vaca Muerta to Uruguaiana, in Rio Grande do Sul
The Brazilian government was informed, through contacts with the team of the recently elected president of Argentina, Javier Milei, that there is interest in maintaining a crucial project for Alberto Fernández's administration: the construction of a gas pipeline to transport natural gas from the mega deposit of Vaca Muerta to Uruguaiana, in Rio Grande do Sul.
This message was communicated to the Brazilian embassy in Buenos Aires by Milei's team, in conversations with Diana Mondino, who is tipped to take over the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The gas pipeline is in the bidding phase by the Argentine government and, if the schedule is followed, the work could be completed between the end of 2024 and the beginning of 2025.
This venture would allow transporting a similar amount of gas to Uruguaiana compared to the Brazil-Bolivia Gas Pipeline, but at lower prices. From Uruguaiana, the gas could be transported to São Paulo, supplying industry in the Southeast region. Fernández was seeking financing from the National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES) to purchase the steel tubes needed for civil works, and the project is considered fundamental for energy integration between the two main Mercosur countries.
