The workers also demanded the reactivation of the furnaces, which have been shut down since February. In August, the workers had already protested against the closure and layoffs of about 300 people.

Closure of Vale Complex Will Result in Layoff of 700 People

The Metalworkers’ Union emphasizes that the closure of the Vale complex will lead to the layoff of about 700 people.

In Simões Filho, Vale Mining Company produces manganese alloy, a raw material for steel. Manganese is a metal with widespread and essential applications in everyday utilities and is found in nature in the form of oxides, hydroxides, and sometimes in the form of carbonates and silicates. Considered the 12th most abundant element in the Earth’s crust, large manganese deposits are found in Ukraine (24%), South Africa (22%), and Australia (16%). Brazil holds about 10% of the world’s manganese reserves.

In Brazil, the main manganese reserves are distributed across three major regions, which, due to the great importance of this metal, have stimulated the development of the main steelmaking hubs in the country. The Serra dos Carajás in Pará; the municipality of Mariana, Morro da Mina, and Serra do Cipó in Minas Gerais; and Urucum in Mato Grosso do Sul stand out for concentrating the largest deposits in the country.

On the other hand, the Southeast region stands out as the main consumer due to the state of Minas Gerais housing the largest steelmaking hub in the country.
