Meeting on the Privatization of the Ports of Ilhéus, Aratu-Candeia, and Salvador of Codeba Is Held by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Port Sector Agencies

With the privatization of Brazilian ports getting closer to happening throughout 2022, the Ministry of Infrastructure is preparing the national ground for this privatization and, during this past week, met with the Special Secretariat of the Investment Partnerships Program of the Ministry of Economy and BNDES to discuss the modeling of the privatization of the ports of Ilhéus, Aratu-Candeia, and Salvador, located in Codeba.

Thus, according to the Ministry of Infrastructure itself, the objective of the meeting is to make the project attractive to investors and to assess the infrastructure needs of the region. The agencies discussed what the best investment strategies in infrastructure works at the ports would be so that, by the end of the privatization process, the cargo movement operations would benefit from this amount allocated. This is the main goal of the ministry for these and other ports of Codeba that will still undergo the privatization process over the next few years.

Furthermore, after the great success that occurred in the auction of the Companhia Docas do Espírito Santo, Codesa, the Ministry of Infrastructure is increasingly committed to ensuring a correct modeling for this process. Thus, the Minister of Infrastructure, Marcelo Sampaio, highlighted the importance of the Codesa auction and commented on the ports of Codeba that will undergo the same process, stating that “It was a successful auction and in partnership with BNDES, and now, we continue the agenda with the Port of Itajaí, Port of São Sebastião, Port of Santos and Codeba.”

Ports of the Companhia Docas da Bahia That Will Undergo the Privatization Process Have Had Over 3 Million Tons Moved in Cargo Operations in 2022

The relevance of Codeba for the Bahia region and the national port sector is increasingly discussed between the Ministry of Infrastructure and other bodies like Antaq (National Agency for Waterway Transportation). Thus, the ministry intends to take advantage of the current situation of the port sector to expand operations in cargo movement at the ports in the complex with investments from the privatization process that will be carried out at the locations.

The ports of Ilhéus, Aratu-Candeia, and Salvador achieved great results and, only in the first few months of 2022, handled almost 3 million tons of various products, including containerized cargo, fuels, chemicals, wood, charcoal, cocoa, and derivatives. Thus, the Ministry of Infrastructure’s investment in the privatization of these ports is focused on these results and on a significant capacity for expansion after the necessary investments in infrastructure works.

Finally, after the meeting with the Special Secretariat of the Investment Partnerships Program of the Ministry of Economy and BNDES, the ministry stated that the expected date for the bidding announcement and auction is the fourth quarter of 2023, with the signing of the contract in the first quarter of 2024 for the start of investments in the ports of Codeba.
