Investment in the Project for the Railroad Connecting Mato Grosso to Pará
The Infrastructure Minister emphasizes that there are interested companies, the railroad project is absolutely viable, and it will be a benchmark in environmental licensing, because that is what it should be. In the interview, Tarcísio also stated that indigenous peoples will be heard, as well as all interested parties. This railroad will be a model of sustainability, that is my priority, Freitas stated.
According to the minister, the government already has “what is most difficult in any enterprise, which is the interested investor.” According to him, environmental viability will be “naturally confirmed.” Tarcísio highlights that they are talking about a railroad that will have a green seal, a modal with zero emissions, which will be built alongside a highway in an already deforested area. This means fewer accidents on roads and zero gas emissions. The Infrastructure Minister has already stated on other occasions that it is necessary to dispel the “wrong narrative” about the environment in Brazil. According to Tarcísio, the government is working to “demonstrate that it is possible to reconcile sustainability and infrastructure provision.

About the Ferrogrão Project
The 933 km railroad will link Sinop, in the state of Mato Grosso, to Miritituba, in the state of Pará, with a route parallel to BR-163. According to Tarcísio, the auction for Ferrogrão could be its “greatest legacy.” The auction is scheduled for the second half of this year. The project has been under evaluation by the TCU (Tribunal de Contas da União) since July 10, 2020.
The construction of the railroad has been criticized by politicians, environmentalists, and traditional communities and faces opposition due to possible social and environmental impacts. A group of about 40 organizations is trying to block the financing mechanisms for Ferrogrão.

The new railroad that will interconnect Cuiabá to Rondonópolis, as well as Rondonópolis with Nova Mutum and Lucas do Rio Verde, besides connecting with the national railway network, will have an investment of R$ 12 billion. According to the state of Mato Grosso, the investment will generate more than 235 thousand jobs, in addition to boosting the economy.
The start of construction will be six months after the presentation of the environmental licensing, which will be partly the responsibility of the state government of Mato Grosso and partly of the company that wins the public call for the railroad. The works are expected to start at the end of 2022. According to the governor, the railroad is important for the export of grains and to connect the industry and commerce of Mato Grosso with the national market. Governor Mauro Mendes states that the food and ethanol industry will go through this railroad. And there is full legal security to do so, and in a few years, they will hear the train whistle from Cuiabá to the mid-north.
