Maersk Revealed New Details About The Construction Project Of The Methanol-Powered Vessel On Its Social Media. The Company Highlighted That The Current Phase Of The Project Is Progressing Successfully, With Delivery Scheduled For Soon.
The maritime solutions company Maersk has exciting news about its next steps in the global market. The company shared details on social media about the model of its methanol-powered vessel construction project. The initiative will contribute to the energy transition of the maritime market, driving the decarbonization of the organization’s operations worldwide.
Maersk Reveals New Details About Its Methanol-Powered Vessel And Continues To Advance The Sustainable Ship Construction Project
Maersk, the world’s largest container transport company, revealed details about the project for its first methanol-powered vessel, which, according to the company, will pave new paths in the maritime industry.
The announcement is part of the company’s ongoing efforts to decarbonize its operations and reduce its carbon emissions.
The vessel, which will be built by Hyundai Mipo Dockyard in South Korea, will be 172 meters long and have a capacity of 2,000 TEU (twenty-foot equivalent units).
It will be powered by dual-fuel engines that can operate on both methanol and traditional low-sulfur marine fuel, giving it the flexibility to adapt to different operational requirements and fuel availability.
In this way, the company’s project aligns with the needs of the global environmental agenda for decarbonization.
Maersk stated that methanol is a promising fuel option for the maritime industry because it is a low-carbon alternative to traditional fossil fuels and can be produced from a variety of renewable sources.
The company also mentioned that it has been working closely with suppliers to ensure a sustainable and reliable supply chain for methanol.
New Methanol-Powered Vessel Features Cutting-Edge Technology And Eco-Friendly Design To Propel The Global Maritime Market
Maersk’s methanol-powered vessel will also feature several other eco-friendly design elements, including a waste heat recovery system that will use the heat from the engines to generate electricity and a hybrid purification system that will remove sulfur and particulate matter from exhaust gases.
“To communicate that the vessel is the start of a new generation of green methanol vessels, we sought the best way to communicate this. We ended up with the slogan ‘ALL THE WAY TO ZERO’ to develop our existing brand platform and highlight our decarbonization efforts,” said Brian Borup, senior brand and design manager.
The new vessel is expected to be delivered in the first quarter of 2024 and will initially operate in Northern Europe.
Maersk also stated that it was exploring the possibility of retrofitting some of its existing ships to operate on methanol.
The announcement from Maersk is the latest in a series of measures by the maritime industry to reduce its carbon footprint. The company is a global leader in maritime market operations and, with the new methanol-powered vessel construction project, is advancing further in sustainability initiatives.
