The marine solutions Maersk has big news about its next steps in the global market. The company released details of the model of its project to build the methanol-powered vessel on social media. The initiative will contribute to the energy transition of the maritime market, driving the decarbonization of the organization's operations across the planet.

Maersk unveils new details of its methanol-powered vessel and continues to advance sustainable shipbuilding project

Maersk, the world's largest container transport in the world, revealed the details of the project for her first methanol-powered vessel, which, according to her, will open new paths in the naval industry.

The announcement is part of the company's ongoing efforts to decarbonize its operations and reduce its carbon footprint.

The vessel, which will be built by Hyundai Mipo Dockyard in South Korea, will be 172 meters long and have a capacity of 2.000 TEU (twenty-foot equivalent units).

It will be powered by dual-fuel engines that can run on either methanol or traditional low-sulfur marine fuel, giving it the flexibility to adapt to different operational requirements and fuel availability.

In this way, the company's project is in line with the needs of decarbonisation of the global environmental agenda.

Maersk said methanol is a promising fuel option for the marine industry because it is a low-carbon alternative to traditional fossil fuels and can be produced from a variety of renewable sources.

The company also said it has been working closely with suppliers to ensure a sustainable and reliable supply chain for methanol.

New methanol-powered vessel features cutting-edge technology and eco-friendly design to drive global maritime market

Maersk's methanol-powered vessel will also feature a number of other eco-friendly design elements, including a waste heat recovery system that will use heat from the engines to generate electricity, and a hybrid scrubbing system that will remove sulfur and particulate matter from the exhaust gases. exhaust.

“To communicate that the vessel is the beginning of a new generation of green methanol vessels, we looked for the best way to communicate this. We ended up with the slogan 'ALL THE WAY TO ZERO' to build on our existing brand platform and highlight our decarbonization efforts,” said Brian Borup, senior manager of brand and design.

The new vessel is expected to be delivered in the first quarter of 2024 and will initially operate in Northern Europe.

Maersk said it was also exploring the possibility of adapting some of its existing ships to operate on methanol.

Maersk's announcement is the latest in a series of measures by the shipping industry to reduce its carbon footprint. The company is a world reference in maritime market operations and, with the new construction project for the methanol-powered vessel, advances even further in sustainability initiatives.
