Experts Warn That Rice Does Not Help to Dry Wet Cell Phones and Can Even Cause Damage to Connectors and Internal Components
The advice is old and well-known: if the cell phone falls in water, put it in rice. Many people have heard this. But the truth is that this method does not work and can even worsen the situation. The warning comes from companies like Apple, iFixit, and Gazelle.
According to Apple, rice does not help at all. On the company’s official website, there is a clear explanation about this. The grains of rice can leave residues on the phone’s connectors and hinder its proper functioning.
Furthermore, trying to charge the device while it is still wet is one of the worst decisions. This can cause corrosion on the pins and irreversible damage.

iFixit, a company specialized in electronic repairs, reinforces the same idea. According to them, oxidation begins the moment water comes into contact with the internal components. In other words, the longer you wait, the worse it can get.
Gazelle, a company that resells used devices overseas, went further. They tested seven different methods to dry cell phones.
Rice came in last place. Even oatmeal and couscous were more effective. The most effective method was simply leaving the device to dry outdoors.
Even with so much information, the myth persists. Part of this happens because sometimes the device works again after being left alone. But this is more luck than the effect of the rice.
If the cell phone falls in water, the ideal is to turn it off immediately. Never try to charge it. Then, hold the device with the connector facing down and give it gentle taps against your hand to remove the excess liquid.
After that, leave the cell phone in a dry place with good ventilation and away from any heat source.
Apple recommends waiting at least 30 minutes before connecting any accessories. If the moisture warning persists, it is best to wait up to 24 hours.
When the damage is greater, the best solution is to seek a technical assistance service. The correct process includes disassembling the device, using isopropyl alcohol, and doing a careful cleaning. This requires technical knowledge.
Rice, therefore, only serves to keep the cell phone still for a few hours. But it does not perform any miracles. And it can even hinder.
