São Paulo will double the number of radars on highways by June 2025, aiming to increase safety and reduce accidents with advanced technology.

The government has announced that it will double the number of radars on state highways by June 2025, from 585 to 1.234. The new devices will feature cutting-edge technology for speed monitoring, license plate reading and vehicle counting, aiming to increase enforcement efficiency and significantly reduce the number of accidents.

The Government of State of Sao Paulo announced a major expansion in electronic monitoring of state highways.

By June 2025, the São Paulo Highway Department (DER-SP) intends to double the number of radars on roads not granted to the private sector.

Currently, there are 585 devices in operation, but this total will rise to 1.234, with the installation of 649 new devices.

The measure's main objective is to increase road safety by reducing the number of accidents caused by speeding.

Furthermore, it seeks to improve traffic management with the use of advanced technologies for monitoring and inspection.

Cutting-edge technology for more efficient inspection

The new radars will have more advanced features than previous devices. Among the features implemented are:

  • Automatic license plate reading (OCR): Allows you to identify vehicles in an irregular situation or with judicial restrictions.
  • Real-time traffic counting: Data on vehicle volume will be transmitted directly to the DER-SP headquarters.
  • Remote monitoring: Supervision will be carried out centrally, allowing for rapid responses to violations.
  • Traffic pattern identification: The data collected will help plan improvements in road infrastructure and traffic management.

The use of these technologies promises to increase the efficiency of inspections and ensure greater compliance with traffic regulations.

How will the radars be distributed?

The new equipment will be installed based on studies carried out by DER-SP, which identified critical points in several regions of the state. Distribution will be carried out as follows:

  • Metropolitan region of Sao Paulo: 124 radars
  • Campinas Region: 85 radars
  • Ribeirao Preto Region: 58 radars
  • Sorocaba Region: 50 radars
  • Paraíba Valley and North Coast Region: 47 radars
  • Other regions of the state: Proportional distribution according to the need indicated by the studies

The points chosen take into account the history of accidents and the volume of vehicles that travel on the roads daily.

Types of radars that will be installed

The new devices will be divided into two main categories:

  1. Fixed-reducing radars: Equipped with panels that show the speed of vehicles, they are used in urban areas and near pedestrian crossings, where the speed limit is reduced.
  2. Fixed radar-controllers: Without a visible display, they monitor medium and high speed sections, preventing excesses.

This differentiation allows inspection to be adapted to each type of highway and the specific safety needs of each region.

Investment in road safety

The Government of the State of São Paulo is investing around R$202,6 million to expand the electronic inspection system.

This amount covers not only the installation of the new radars, but also their maintenance and operation for the next few years.

Expected impact on accident reduction

According to experts, the presence of radars considerably reduces the occurrence of accidents, as it makes drivers more respectful of speed limits.

Studies show that electronic monitoring can reduce the number of fatal collisions by up to 30%.

The installation of new radars also aims to meet the goals of the state government's Road Safety Plan, which aims to halve the traffic fatality rate by 2030.

For experts, by doubling the number of speed cameras on São Paulo state highways, the government is seeking to improve the safety of drivers and passengers, reducing accidents and providing more organized traffic.

Advanced electronic monitoring will allow for more efficient and fair control, contributing to the preservation of lives.
